Warning: Spoilers Ahead for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #1
The mutant haven of Krakoa is heating up with intrigue amidst X-Title-wide crossover Hellfire Gala, Magneto was the last person seen with Wanda at the end of the event, enjoying an apparent reconciliation following years of strife. But, according to a subset of subtle clues secreted within the cross-title narrative, Magneto is as innocent as he claims to be... and the true culprit remains at liberty.
In current X-Men continuity, mutantkind has found refuge in a land of literal wonders on the living Island of Krakoa, governed by a cadre of mutants known as the Quiet Council, including such luminaries as Magneto and Charles Xavier. It appears there may be trouble in paradise, unfortunately, as, after the Hellfire Gala, a public exhibition of Krakoa’s sovereign nationality to the world, Scarlet Witch was found murdered. The leading suspect, Magneto, now lies in a coma after a severe beating by of the X-Men and his surrogate son Quicksilver, following a denial and spirited defense by the onetime archvillain. All of this is leading into X-Men: The Trial of Magneto from Leah Williams and Lucas Werneck.
Details on the case may be forthcoming, but fans such as the shape-shifting Mystique. Mystique, not necessarily known for her trustworthiness, has recently been at odds with Xavier and Magneto, over their unwillingness to allow the resurrection of her deceased wife Destiny, a mutant with precognitive abilities whom they believe would disrupt mutant society. She’d even recently sworn revenge for her forced separation from a loved one in X-Men #20, after they reneged on a deal to give Destiny resurrection priority.
At this point, her motives and eventual plan can only be guessed at, however, her actions result in the removal of Magneto from The Quiet Council as well as a destabilization of the X-Men’s relationship with the outside world: a clear step in the direction of a hostile takeover. In all likelihood, this will form part of the story-arc Inferno, which featured Mystique and a resurrected Destiny in solicitations.
With juxtaposition, this inference places the supposed final meeting between Magneto and Scarlet Witch, an emotional and heartfelt reunion for the Master of Magnetism, into an exceedingly disturbing light, being an act on the part of the impostor Mystique to frame him for murder.
