Warning: Spoilers for Storm #6!It's never easy to be a fugitive, but being a mutant on the run is a whole different level of risk whether or not one is a member of the X-Men. One alarming statistic reveals that the X-Men are in more danger than ever. Not only are they being hunted, but they're more likely to be killed than captured at a rate that even the Avengers find notable.
In Storm #6 by Murewa Ayodele and Luciano Vecchio, Charles Xavier approaches former X-Men leader Storm for aid after his escape from Greymalkin Prison. Although Ororo is now d with the Avengers, Charles seems set on the idea of her aid. Rather than immediately turn him in or call upon her new teammates, she reveals a startling piece of information.
According to the Avengers' data, 95% of mutant fugitives are killed during attempted capture. Given that Xavier has just fled prison, he could end up included in that statistic. It's a glimpse at how little value mutant lives hold post-Krakoa and just how far the X-Men have fallen.
Mutant Criminals and the X-Men Are More Likely to End Up Dead Than Imprisoned
Storm #6 by Murewa Ayodele, Luciano Vecchio, Alex Guimarães, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Travis Lanham
It's no secret that the world shifted drastically after the fall of Krakoa, and the X-Men's new From the Ashes era has focused heavily on mutantkind's struggle to re the human world they tried to mostly leave behind. Entering human society again comes with a host of familiar issues: prejudice, ostracization, and violence. While none of it is new for mutants as a whole, it seems worse than ever in the "new" world. Not only do they regularly encounter distrust from regular citizens, but the government itself is once again either complicit or directly responsible for their continued suffering.

The X-Men Have Been Betrayed by Xavier For the One Person We Never Saw Coming
Professor X would do anything to protect his X-Men, but now he is forced to choose between his mutant superheroes and the person most precious to him.
Storm revealing that only a paltry 5% of mutants survive attempted capture is horrifying, to say the least. At a glance, it may appear as though only "evil" or villainous mutants are paying a high price, but any X-Men fan knows that's hardly the case. Mutants don't need to commit a real crime to be branded a criminal. Although Xavier was imprisoned for specific crimes, institutions like Greymalkin Prison exist to make inmates out of mutants for simply existing. Consequently, practically any mutant can fall under the umbrella of the Avengers' statistics, and it's not limited to only the real villains.
The X-Men Will Never Be Out of Danger in the World of Marvel Comics
The Safety of Krakoa Was Only Temporary
Krakoa was a lush safety net for most mutants and for years shielded them from a reality they've now been thrown back into. If mutants were hated before they established their own nation, From the Ashes has made it clear that things are even worse now. Mutants are fighting one of the most uphill battles they've ever faced, and, as Storm reminds Xavier, there are no more resurrection protocols. Those 95% of mutants killed during attempted capture will remain dead. The proof is in the numbers: the world is more dangerous than ever for mutant villains and the X-Men alike.
