Warning! Spoilers for Marvel's Phoenix #10!
Marvel Comics continues to add complications to Jean Grey’s attempt to forge her own path as a solo hero in the publisher’s ongoing Phoenix series, and as much as she is faced with sweeping cosmic threats that must be overcome, perhaps the most intriguing conflict in the series yet involves the unexpected resurrection of Jean’s long-dead sister.
Phoenix #10, written by Stephanie Phillips, with art by Alessandro Mirocolo, brings many of the series’ current threads together in dramatic fashion, while at the same time setting up the next arc for Jean Grey.
The return of Jean’s sister to Marvel canon was perhaps the most unexpected outcome of this climactic issue, and the publisher clearly knows this is a big deal, as the Phoenix #12 promises to elaborate on “the miraculous return of Sara Grey,” while also teasing her “secret origin.”
Marvel's Ambitious "Phoenix" Solo Series Takes A Deeply Personal Turn With The Resurrection Of Sara Grey

Most fans agree with Marvel's decision to take Jean Grey out of the familiar context of the X-Men franchise and attempt to truly use her long-time status as the Phoenix to make her a proper solo hero in the greater Marvel Universe. So far, the Phoenix series has taken some exciting steps toward that goal, most notably pitting Jean against all-time great Marvel antagonist Thanos. Starting with Phoenix #11, it has already been teased that she will undergo a further amplification of her powers, in another encouraging development.

Marvel Reveals Phoenix's Cosmic Redesign That Fits Her Godly Status
Jean Grey is an X-Man no more; only the Phoenix remains. It’s finally time for the Phoenix to be reborn and look like the god that she is.
At the same time, while author Stephanie Phillips continues to lay the framework for a sweeping interstellar saga, she has also just added a deeply personal wrinkle to Jean's journey: that is, the resurrection of Sara Grey, Jean's sister. Sara was infamously revealed to have been murdered off- by anti-mutant villains in 1994's X-Men (Vol. 2) #36; her children, who survived her at the time, were later also killed off, during the gruesome another Phoenix host to arise from their bloodline.
Despite Her Past Limited Appearances, Sara Grey's Return Is A Big Deal Moving Forward
Phoenix #12; Written By Stephanie Phillips; Art By Roi Mercado; Available June 11, 2025 From Marvel Comics.
First introduced in 1980, Sara Grey has a long, if limited history in Marvel lore, but her biggest claim to fame is a "What If?" of comic book history; after Jean Grey's original death in the '80s, the "Dark Phoenix Saga," and forever altering the trajectory of the character's heroic journey, and the future of the X-Men franchise as a whole.
The forking paths of how [Sara Grey's] addition to the contemporary Marvel Universe could play out are all equally intriguing.
The return of Sara Grey in Phoenix is the character's most significant appearance yet, and the forking paths of how her addition to the contemporary Marvel Universe could play out are all equally intriguing. X-Men lore contains several hints that Sara was a mutant, or could have become one, threads that this series could pick up on decades after the fact. There is, of course, as much chance of Sara becoming an antagonist to Jean Grey as there is of her being an ally, and in either case, her comeback is a major "x-factor" for legendary X-Men hero Jean Grey.
Phoenix #10 is available now from Marvel Comics.
