For starters, recasts of famous characters can often result in the actor's performance feeling like an imitation of the original performer’s work. However, if their performance is too far removed from that of the original actor, it can seem like they're not playing the same character.

It should be noted that although David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson received top billing throughout The X-Files' original run, neither of them appear in every episode. Mulder left The X-Files after season 7 for a time, and Scully is partnered with John Doggett in his absence. Scully herself doesn't appear in five episodes. This, in a small way, demonstrates that The X-Files can work without both Mulder and Scully's involvement.

While it is hard to imagine The X-Files without Mulder and Scully, if the reboot is to move forward, the best option is to focus on new characters for the future of The X-Files. Mulder and Scully are iconic characters with their dynamic and relationship being as much a part of the franchise's success as the paranormal aspects. However, it feels as though the characters and the stories about them have run their course.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe and the revival series included Mulder and Scully but didn't have much new to add to their story. Having them return again only to go over the same material would be a disservice to the characters. Fear of moving on from what audiences know is not reason enough to bring them back. Instead, the show must attempt to establish a new team of agents with their own stories who can help the series evolve. If The X-Files reboot proves the franchise can survive without Mulder and Scully, then it could live on for years to come.
