Wuthering Waves is available now, and the Genshin Impact-style action RPG is drawing a lot of favorable comparisons to its HoYoverse counterpart. Developed by Kuro Games, Wuthering Waves is a gacha game with slick, responsive combat and open world exploration that is immediately reminiscent of Breath of the Wild (and, of course, Genshin also). The game is available on both mobile devices and PC, with controller and plans for a console launch later in its life cycle.

As a gacha game, Wuthering Waves features its own banner system that allows players to spend Tides in an effort to obtain new characters and weapons for their . Most gacha games feature pity systems built into these gacha mechanics to help insulate their audience from truly awful experiences. Essentially, pity systems are a fail-safe that kicks in once a player has used a certain amount of currency - in this case, Tides - to guarantee they get the character or weapon they wanted. Not all of these are built equal, however - here's how Wuthering Waves' pity system works.

Wuthering Waves might have some familiar looking features, but it's the elements that set it apart that have potential to make an impact.

How Wuthering Waves' Pity System Works

When Do Fail-Safes Kick In On Rateup Banners?

Wuthering Waves' pity system is designed around some principal elements of how its banners work. The game features the usual permanent banner with one type of currency and a rate-up, limited time banner with a separate currency. In Wuthering Waves, the rules for using Tides on banners is as follows:

  • Every 10 pulls on either the permanent banner (Tidal Chorus) or limited-time banners will yield at least one 4-star character or weapon
  • Every 80 pulls on either the permanent banner (Tidal Chorus) or limited-time banners will yield at least one 5-star character or weapon
  • Weapon banners do not have a 50/50 chance once pity is triggered; they will always yield the rate-up weapon
  • Character banners do have a 50/50 chance once pity is triggered; they will either yield the rate-up character or a different 5-star character
  • If a player fails their 50/50 chance on their first pity and reaches pity once again, they will be guaranteed the rate-up character of the banner they are using their Tides on

As seen in the first image above, the Wuthering Waves pity system kicks in at 80 Tides spent on any banner. At 80, the player will automatically receive a 5-star character or weapon. Crucially, there are no 50/50s in place for Wuthering Waves weapon banners, which can make deciding whether to go for a new character or a desirable weapon a much easier choice - weapons will only ever be 80 Tides maximum, while a desired character could be as costly as 160 Tides.

In the permanent Tidal Chorus banner, pity only works slightly differently - it's still capped at 80 Tides before triggering, but there will never be a guaranteed character yielded even after 160 Tides, since the banner doesn't feature a specific rate-up character and instead offers those from a constant pool.

Does Pity Carry Over In Wuthering Waves?

Can Tides Spent On One Banner Affect A Later Banner?

More good news for Wuthering Waves players - pity does carry over across multiple banners. That means that, if a player only manages to muster up 50 Tides for a limited-time rate-up banner and fails to hit the 5-star character or weapon they wanted, that count towards pity will be stored and then applied to the same type of banner later. This means that there will be separate pity counts for four different convene types: the permanent character banner; the permanent weapon banner; the limited-time character banner; and the limited-time weapon banner.

Tracking pity can be an excellent skill in gacha games, especially ones with metas that could potentially move fast. While Wuthering Waves is still too new to know if that will be the case for sure, being able to plan out the optimal time to spend Tides will help s feel strong for the minimal amount of investment.

In general, the rule for pity is one of two options: only roll on limited-time banners that an can hit pity twice on (so 160 Tides saved/accumulated during the banner's run-time); or, alternatively, only roll on limited-time banners that are desirable, so that when pity inevitably triggers across two or three different rate-ups, it will still be a good hit for a Wuthering Waves 's spread of characters and weapons.
