  • Wonder Woman: Dead Earth reveals that Steve can be credited with Diana's love for humanity.

I may not be the biggest Superman shipper, but I’ve always believed that if Diana were to be with any man, the Man of Steel would be a far better choice than Steve Trevor. This is mainly because I’ve long thought Diana and Steve’s relationship was flat and unremarkable. However, a recent DC Black Label book has finally shown me why Steve Trevor is actually an epic love interest for Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman’s love for humanity is a fundamental part of her character, and the fact that Steve inspired this deep affection makes it clear that he truly is her one true love.

Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer’s Wonder Woman: Dead Earth series introduces a Diana Prince who awakens from a centuries-long slumber to find her friends long gone and Earth reduced to a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Wonder Woman Dead Earth #1 Steve Trevor

Although her loved ones are dead, flashbacks and Wonder Woman’s memories keep these characters vividly alive in the narrative, offering a deep character study of the Amazon warrior. Among those featured in her recollections is Steve Trevor. Despite his presence being limited to memories, this portrayal has finally convinced me that Steve is indeed Diana’s best love interest—something no comic has managed to achieve before.

Steve Trevor Is Responsible For the Main Reason I Love Wonder Woman–Her Unwavering Love for Humanity

In Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #1, Diana is betrayed and captured by humans she was trying to help. One of these humans, Dee, visits her out of guilt. During this visit, Wonder Woman reveals that she doesn’t blame Dee for her betrayal because she “loves” her. Dee is understandably stunned and confused by this declaration, prompting Wonder Woman to recount how she fell in love with Steve Trevor. She explains that her love for him has grown into a profound comion for all humanity, even when they imprison and betray her.

Diana explains what made her fall in love with Steve, saying, “What I saw in his eyes struck me. Part fear, part curiosity, part kindness. I saw in his eyes a willingness to try new things, like a child.” Reading this, I couldn’t help but fall a little in love with Steve as well, especially knowing that it was because of him that Diana fell in love with humanity, as she later explains to Dee. Wonder Woman’s love for humanity is a fundamental part of her character, and the fact that Steve inspired this deep affection makes it clear that he truly is her one true love.

Why Wonder Woman Needs Romance in Her Life (According to Her Writer)

Wonder Woman is a strong, independent woman who don't need no man... right? WRONG. According to DC writer Tom King, Diana Prince does need a man.

I Would LOVE to See Tom King Bring the Connection of Diana’s Love for Steve and Humanity Into His Ongoing Wonder Woman Run

Tom King’s portrayal of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor’s relationship in his ongoing comic run has been remarkable, offering a fresh and nuanced exploration of their dynamic. Yet, I believe there’s untapped potential to deepen this depiction by incorporating the reasons Diana expressed in Dead Earth for her love of Steve into the mainstream continuity. King has skillfully depicted Trevor as a crucial source of strength for Diana, but to fully capture the essence of their bond, it’s essential to highlight the qualities that initially drew Wonder Woman to him—his fear, curiosity, kindness, and how these things contributed to Diana falling in love with humanity as a whole.

Wonder Woman is the superhero identity of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes. As mighty as her fellow heroes Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unmatched in her comion and virtue.
