Patty Jenkins reveals she has finished work on the script for Wonder Woman 3. Wonder Woman opened in theaters in the summer of 2017, becoming a smash hit at the box office and a critical favorite. Much of the film's praise was attributed to Jenkins, prompting Warner Bros. to sign her on to direct the film's sequel.

Originally slated for release in 2019 before being delayed multiple times in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 was released in December 2020 on HBO Max and in limited theaters. The film received mixed to negative reviews, and to many was a major step down from its predecessor. Wonder Woman 1984 was still a hit as it drew more subscribers to sign up for HBO Max and was the best-selling movie of 2021 on home video. Jenkins had been teasing Wonder Woman 3 before Wonder Woman 1984 was released, yet development on the movie has been pretty silent, particularly in regard to the Warner Bros. Discovery handling of many DC projects.

While speaking as a guest at the Matera Film Festival in Italy, Jenkins revealed last week she finished writing the last scene of Wonder Woman 3. Jenkins revealed she has been planning a trilogy but is still thinking of what might happen after Wonder Woman 3, indicating she would return for more sequels. Read Jenkins' full quote below:

"And so, where I said that I was only going to do one, then oh my god, I have to do two. And then, I find myself saying, ‘Oh my god, I’m antsy to do three.’ And so, even now, I say, ‘That’s it’ because I always plan a three-movie arc. There is a story that goes through these three different movies as a whole. But even now, I just wrote last week the final scene of Wonder Woman 3 and I thought, I might be interested to see what happens next. So you’ll never know. They have asked us to think of ways to do more and it accidentally happens. But you’ll never know. I have a lot of other films that I’m excited to do as well. And I love Gal Gadot so that makes it better too."

Plot details regarding Wonder Woman 3 have been scarce but star Gal Gadot did confirm that Lynda Carter was expected to return. Carter played Wonder Woman in the 1970s television series and had a cameo in the after-credit scene of Wonder Woman 1984 as Asteria, an ancient Amazon who stayed behind in the world of men so her Amazon sister could escape to the island of Themyscira. While both previous Wonder Woman movies were period pieces, it is believed Wonder Woman 3 will take place in the present-day DCEU following the events of Justice League.

Currently, there is no release date set for Wonder Woman 3. It was originally believed Jenkins would direct Wonder Woman 3 after Star Wars: Rogue Squadron but since that film was recently removed from the Disney release schedule it could mean Wonder Woman 3 is Jenkins' next project. The earliest Wonder Woman 3 would be able to open is 2024 which would arrive four years after Wonder Woman 1984 and seven years after the first film. Currently, the only DC film set to open that year is Joker: Folie à Deux. While the future of the DCEU remains up in the air while Warner Bros. Discovery tries to find new leadership for the franchise it seems safe to say that Wonder Woman 3 is a high priority for the studio.
