The first film opens with Dorothy and her group taking the infamous Yellow Brick Road, foreshadowing the events to come. But it is the musical's second act, and by extension, the movie, that has the most direct tie-ins to the origins of The Wizard of Oz characters beyond just the two witches-to-be at the forefront of the film. This includes origin stories for the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow, all of which are teased in Wicked.
As the movie prepares for release in November, the film recently made progress by releasing the first trailer for Wicked: For Good. That trailer included snippets from two of the movie's most notable songs, "For Good" and "No Good Deed." It also teased a new song from Elphaba, as director Jon M. Chu has confirmed that there will be two original songs for the movie adaptation. While the trailer focuses heavily on Glinda and Elphaba, it also highlights the transformation to come with another key character.

Cutting Between Dorothy And Him Sets This Up
The Wicked: For Good trailer points to Fiyero's journey in the second film. In the first movie, the "Dancing Through Life" singer was introduced as the suave, charming prince. He catches the eye of both Elphaba and Glinda, though he ultimately enters a relationship with Glinda. Wicked: For Good will see Fiyero receive more screen time and deepen his connection with Glinda, who he gets engaged to (and as the trailer shows, eventually marries).
If Dorothy is featured more heavily, it is possible that they would want to show the Scarecrow earlier as well.
But as the trailer foreshadows, Wicked: For Good will also see this character become The Scarecrow. This is clearly telegraphed in the trailer when Dorothy and her group are seen speaking to the Wizard, and then the shot cuts straight to Fiyero. Smartly, the Scarecrow is partially obscured in the initial shot, hiding that he is actually Fiyero. The character's outfit in the trailer also teases this transition, as he wears a green outfit that looks similar to that of the scarecrow in the shot of The Wizard of Oz ensemble.
How Does Fiyero Become The Scarecrow, And When Will It Happen?
In The Musical, Elphaba Casts A Spell On Fiyero
As per the musical adaptation of Wicked, Fiyero ends up turning into the scarecrow after his life is threatened. Elphaba chants a spell during her big ballad "No Good Deed," as per the musical, and that turns him into the Scarecrow and saves his life. The Wicked: For Good trailer includes "No Good Deed" as its first song, so they will definitely be including this number and pushing it heavily as part of the marketing. As such, the Fiyero transformation may still happen during this moment.
Dorothy's Role In Wicked: For Good Explained (Who Is Playing Her?)
Based on the trailer for Wicked: For Good, Dorothy will have a bigger role in the sequel than she does in the musical, which could impact the story.
However, there is a possibility that Fiyero's Scarecrow turn could happen earlier in the movie than it did in the stage show. This difference might come down to the movie's departure from its source material in how it handles Dorothy. In the stage version, the character is conventionally seen just in shadow. She has already been featured twice in the trailer, however, suggesting that she may have a bigger role in Chu's version of the story. If Dorothy is featured more heavily, it is possible that they would want to show the Scarecrow earlier as well.
Wicked: For Good could intentionally obscure the Scarecrow for the majority of the film in the way they did in the trailer, not revealing that it was Fiyero. However, once he does transform, it will be a great opportunity for the team to show off their visual effects, costume, and makeup work. From the fabrics and colors of the Emerald City to the CGI metamorphosis of the flying monkeys, these elements were key in Wicked and can be well exhibited once again through his Scarecrow transformation in Wicked: For Good.
