Warning: contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #16
Young Avengers, but his code name Wiccan has long been a source of contention. Though it might seem harmless to some, the name "Wiccan" refers to an entire religion practiced today. The latest issue of Guardians of the Galaxy makes it clear this name is probably going to stick for the foreseeable future.
Wiccan first appeared in the pages of Young Avengers #1 in 2005, though he appeared much earlier as one of the infant twins seen in The Vision and Scarlet Witch #12 in 1986. Throughout his time as a superhero, his teammates have, on at least one occasion, commented on the problematic nature of his name. There have been some attempts to change his name. He's destined to become the omnipotent Demiurge in the future, and since marrying his long-time lover Hulking he's been known as the Prince Consort, but neither name has entirely supplanted "Wiccan".
This is further shown in Guardians of the Galaxy #16 by Al Ewing and Juan Frigeri. The issue opens with Hulking and Billy helping work crews rebuild Throneworld II on the remnants of the Hala II. The foreman refers to both as "The Hulking and Wiccan--the Emperor and Prince Consort...", revealing that Billy's reputation as Wiccan extends far into the stars as he's now known by the Kree and Skrull subjects of his husband. This seems to confirm that, for the time being, Billy is stuck with the Wiccan moniker, as it is what he's known as throughout the galaxy.
This presents several interesting wrinkles going forward. Both Hulking and Wiccan have been fan-favorite characters among the popular Young Avengers, and Billy has been even more visible after being featured in WandaVision on Disney+. While Billy and his brother Tommy only appear as children, the show makes their heroic destiny very clear by not only showcasing their powers but also showing Billy in his comics-accurate costume during a Halloween episode. The wider potential for Young Avengers certainly hasn't been lost on Marvel, given that a number of Billy's teammates have appeared or are slated to appear in various properties across the MCU in one form or another. This poses the question - when and if the older Billy appears - how will the MCU handle his problematic superhero alias, given that it seems set in stone in the comics?
Of course, this isn't to say Marvel couldn't shake up Billy's status quo one way or another, leading to some sort of name change. As the latest Guardians of the Galaxy heads into the events of Last Annihilation, it's possible Billy will forge a new identity beyond his old one. However, for now, it seems like Scarlet Witch's son Billy is stuck with his questionable Wiccan code name.
