The last 10 years have delivered us some of the best Neo-Western films in cinema history. If early signs are any indication, these movies will follow the same pattern, recreating the gripping magic that distinguishes the genre. A few of them are already on the way to greatness, promising everything Western fans could hope for: from emotionally intriguing protagonists to tense standoffs unfolding on stunningly wild landscapes.

5 Rust

After the production delay following the on-set tragedy that happened in 2021, the trailer of Alec Baldwin's controversial Western was released earlier this year following the movie's premiere at the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival in Poland in November 2024. The first footage of the film hints at an intense, adrenaline-filled journey that will certainly appeal to fans of the genre, while maintaining a strong emotional core thanks to the two main characters.

Set in the 1880s Kansas, Baldwin plays the role of an outlaw, Harland Rust, next to young actor Patrick Scott McDermott. The plot follows Rust as he helps his teenage grandson break out of jail after he accidentally killed a rancher and is sentenced to hanging. Together, they set out to flee to Mexico; a frantic trip against time on the unforgiving American frontier. Between tragedies, redemption, and desperate attempts to escape the law, Rust has all the making of an intriguing Western.

4 Trail of Vengeance

Set to hit theaters and on-demand streaming platforms on May 23, Trail of Vengeance features a stellar cast, including Rumer Willis as the lead character. The movie takes place in the late 19th century and follows a woman, Katherine Atherton, whose life is suddenly disrupted by the tragic murder of her husband.

However, she soon decides to embark on a mission to seek justice, and she comes across John Scobell, the first black Pinkerton agent with a complicated past who used to be friends with her husband. This film features many elements typical of the Western genre: a quest for justice (or retribution) and unlikely bonds between complex characters.

Johnny Remo, the director, claimed the movie is a tribute to the endurance of the human spirit and the legacy of the first black Pinkerton agent (Via Media Play News). With its sympathetic heroine and her journey of survival and revenge set against the harsh environment of the American frontier, Trail of Vengeance is worth the wait.

3 The Last Rodeo

Directed by Jon Avnet, The Last Rodeo is soon coming to theaters to deliver a heartfelt take on the Western drama. The movie boasts acclaimed actor Neal McDonough, who has received relentless recognition throughout his career for his character roles and often antagonistic parts. However, the film sees him take on a more sympathetic role as Joe Wainwright, a retired champion bull rider who, in order to help his grandson, chooses to reenter and win a competition despite his advancing age and troubled past.

The Last Rodeo promises to be a gripping story of sacrifice and second chances. Joe appears as a profoundly intriguing character. Similarly, his relationship with his estranged daughter will likely be a significant topic in the movie. Avnet's production will likely possess both the rough aesthetic and poignant emotional depth of the best Westerns in history.

2 Eddington

Among the many great releases of the year, the movie we are all the most excited about is Eddington. The Western boasts Pedro Pascal, the most beloved star of the moment, and Award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix. Aside from the stellar cast, the director is also an additional source of enthusiasm, especially for horror fans. Ari Aster, famous for the graphic intensity of his terrifying cults Hereditary and Midsommar, has ventured into Western filmmaking.

We are eager to see Aster's typically visceral cinematography unfold in the unforgiving world of this genre. Although described as an ensemble film, the central plot follows the rivalry between Mayor Ted Garcia (Pascal) and the town's sheriff (Phoenix), which stems from the sheriff’s refusal to wear a mask during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic at a grocery store. Their quarrel inadvertently influences the fate of the entire town. With its many perspectives, almost comical plot, and nuanced themes, Eddington promises a thought-provoking exploration of the socio-political tensions of recent times.

1 Buffalo Daze

Directed by Raen LeVell, Buffalo Daze appears as an unusual and beautifully crafted contemporary Western. In the movie, Eric Nelsen, famous for his work in Yellowstone's acclaimed prequel 1883, portrays Charles M. Russell. Known as "the cowboy artist", Russell was also a gifted storyteller and an advocate for the rights of Native Americans. It is through his sharp eyes that the public will get to see the story of half-Indian and half-Irish cowboy Jim Grinder, a legendary figure of the Old West who even crossed paths with the Western genre's most beloved outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

The movie seems to offer a much more nuanced and thoughtful take on the Western genre, providing, as Brady Jandreau suggested, a social commentary even before the term was ever coined.

Among the many adventures that will conquer the heart of this unlikely hero of the past is Grinder’s relentless battle to prevent buffalo extinctions. Given the valorous reputation and intriguing story of its characters, Buffalo Daze is highly anticipated.
