The Asgardian God of Thunder, Thor is one of Marvel's most powerful heroes - a godly do-gooder famous for his storm-based powers and enchanted hammer. But in the sphere of the gods, even Thor is only a mid-level powerhouse - in this article, we're looking at the A-list.

For this list, we're only considering gods with a particular connection to Thor and his surrounding lore. So while Marvel's supreme being the One-Above-All does exist in the same universe as Thor, that entity won't appear here, since they don't have a particular connection... at least, not yet.

11 Odin Borson

First Seen in Journey Into Mystery #85 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby

You know it's a list of scarily powerful beings when Odin is only at #10. Thor's biological father and the All-Father of the Asgardian pantheon, Odin is currently dead in Marvel lore, but before that he wielded the All-Power. This creator-god-tier ability allows the wielder to command total control over reality, able to enact pretty much any goal from resurrection to rolling back time. This incredible power comes with two downsides - it quickly exhausts the wielder, causing them to fall into a mystical coma in order to recover, and it's limited by the wielder's wisdom and insight - if they can't think of exactly how to use the All-Power in a given situation, it can't help them.

Even without the All-Power, Odin was a mighty warrior who spent his long reign collecting and creating powerful artifacts, including Thor's hammer Mjolnir, his own enchanted spear Gungnir, and a suit of armor that allowed him to fight Galactus one-on-one.

10 Utgard-Loki, aka The One Who Cannot Be Named

First Seen in Immortal Thor #1 by Al Ewing and Martin Coccolo, Designed by Alex Ross

The recent Immortal Thor has unleashed the Utgard-Gods. Utgard-Gods are a splinter group of the Elder Gods - the first, primordial gods of Earth, each totally embodying a fundamental force. Elder Gods are to Marvel's regular gods as the gods are to humans - vastly more powerful, more abstract beings whose personalities and goals are totally defined by the forces they represent. Indeed, all Marvel's regular gods are mere shadows of the Elder Gods - more human, idiosyncratic reflections of the originals.

The Utgard-Gods were created when the Demogorge (on who more later) brought the era of the Elder Gods to an end. The Utgard-Loki escaped to a realm outside reality known as the Utgard, taking four allies with him. These gods lived in banishment until being summoned by Gaea to end humanity. The Utgard-Loki is the original god of trickery and magic, and the originator of the godly force represented by Thor's brother Loki. The Utgard-Loki has immense mystical power, able to accomplish illusions of any size and give thoughts and beliefs physical form.

9 Kemur and Nrgl

First Seen in Immortal Thor #22 by Al Ewing and Jan Bazaldua

Kemur is an ally of Utgard-Loki, representing the concept of ruling over others. A gigantic minotaur, Kemur is unbeatable by anyone who acknowledges his status as King of the Gods, however those who sincerely dismiss this claim can overcome him, since he represents an illusory form of authority. Despite his fearsome reputation, Kemur ran from the Demogorge, seeking safe harbor in Utgard-Loki's realm outside reality.

thor villain Nrgl

Kemur has a symbiotic relationship with Nrgl the Endless City - a godly city that houses all gods who have been removed from existence. Nrgl is sentient and able to influence its own growth to create unique elements, such as mystical steel.

8 Gaea

First Seen in Giant-Size Avengers #4, Created by Steve Englehart and Don Heck

Thor's biological mother, Gaea is an Elder God who represents and embodies the natural world. Gaea has immense control over biological beings, able to grant them powers, heal all wounds, and absorb their energy to use as her own. Gaea has multiple expressions as both creator and destroyer, and recently revealed to Thor that in order to safeguard the planet, she has unleashed the Utgard-Gods to destroy humanity. However, Gaea is not inherently villainous, and has also given humanity Thor as a counterbalance and final chance at survival.

Gaea considers all Earth's monsters as her children, and has called the Hulk her favorite son, giving the Green Goliath a metaphysical relation to Thor.

7 Toranos, aka the Utgard-Thor

First Seen in Immortal Thor #1 by Al Ewing and Martin Coccolo, Designed by Alex Ross

Another Utgard-God, Toranos is the Elder God of the storm. Toranos is the Utgard-God from who Thor is derived and has a superior version of his powers, including a gigantic wheel that he wields as a weapon (the wheel visually mimics Thor's habit of spinning his hammer, as well as representing the natural cycle of fate and destiny.) Toranos is so strong and powerful that even while empowering multiple people with his godly abilities, Thor itted he couldn't beat Toranos in a fight.

Instead, Thor declared Toranos worthy, using their connection and the enchantment of his hammer to force a new spirit of heroism on the Elder God. This led to Toranous being tortured by his fellow Utgard-Gods, with Thor performing a mercy killing with Toranos' blessing.

6 Tiwaz, aka Buri, aka the Utgard-Odin

First Seen in Journey Into Mystery #97 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

The Elder God of wisdom, Tiwaz is the archetype from which Odin later emerged, while also being Thor's biological great-grandfather. Tiwaz is a wandering god who originally commanded - and potentially created - the All-Power. While he no longer has its immense abilities, he still has supernatural powers, including total control over his own form and body, able to shapeshift and grow to gigantic size. He's served by Whiteface the eagle and is one of the few beings who can lift Mjolnir.

5 The Prime Celestial, aka The One Above All

Debuted in Eternals #7 by Jack Kirby

The confusingly named 'One Above All' shouldn't be confused with Marvel's multiversal supreme being of the same name. Instead, this Prime Celestial is the greatest of the space-god species known as the Celestials, and is responsible for commanding the Fourth Host - a group of Celestials who decide whether advanced worlds live or die. The Prime Celestial is responsible for destroying the First Firmament (a corrupted embodiment of Marvel's first ever cycle of reality), eventually leading to the creation of the multiverse, and had a hand in creating the omnipotent Beyonders.

The Prime Celestial can warp time, read and influence minds, and has almost limitless non-corporeal strength, including being able to move planets on a whim. The Prime Celestial often represents the Celestials in gatherings of the Abstract Entities, alongside Eternity, Galactus and Death.

4 Atum/The Demogorge

First Appeared in Thor #300/Thor Annual #10 by Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio and Keith Pollard/Mark Gruenwald, Alan Zelenetz and Bob Hall

While Earth's original Elder Gods were immensely powerful, they were also chaotic and unruly, eventually becoming a force for evil thanks to their constant warring and desire for servants. When this happened, Gaea birthed Atum - the first "true god," and part of a new species lesser in power than the Elder Gods, but also less chaotic. Atum traveled the planet, slaying the various demons and monstrosities created by the Elder Gods and absorbing their power, until he became a new being named 'Demogorge.'

As Demogorge, Atum gained the ability to consume Elder Gods, taking their power into himself. Demogorge essentially rendered the Elder Gods extinct (though some survived by fleeing reality) and then entered an eons-long sleep. Demogorge fulfills a vital cosmic purpose of consuming gods who have been forgotten by their worshipers, stopping their power from running loose.

1

3 The Chaos King, aka Amatsu-Mikaboshi

First Seen in Thor: Blood Oath #6 by Mike Oeming and Scott Kolins

Amatsu-Mikaboshi is a God of Evil with major magical talent. Amatsu-Mikaboshi's dark magic allows him to shapeshift, exist in multiple places at once, and control anyone he brings back to life. However, even this dark god is just the lesser form of the Chaos King - the counterpart to Eternity (the embodiment of Marvel's reality) who seeks to return reality to a churn of formless chaos. After many evil deeds as a lesser god, Amatsu-Mikaboshi managed to reclaim the power to become the Chaos King once again, killing and absorbing entire pantheons.

The Chaos King possessed the power of all the gods Amatsu-Mikaboshi had slain, and was beyond omnipotent (able to supersede the omnipotence of other godly forces.) The Chaos King destroyed foes including Zeus and the Demogorge, and was only defeated by being locked outside reality during the events of the Chaos War event.

2 The Demiurge Primordial

First Seen in Thor Annual #10 by Mark Gruenwald, Alan Zelenetz and Bob Hall

The first sentient life on Earth, the Demiurge Primordial was created thanks to the combined energy of Earth's lifeforce. The Demiurge expressed itself by creating the Elder Gods, who each represent a different aspect of the Demiurge Primordial given separate life and form. The Demiurge later fathered Atum when Gaea sought a way to rid the planet of the corrupted Elder Gods.

immortal thor's demiurge 3

The Demiurge Primordial is above even the Elder Gods. Since Gaea used the Elder God energy consumed by the Demogorge to create Marvel's modern gods, the Demiurge Primordial is the progenitor of all Earthly gods in Marvel lore. However, the 'Demiurge' is as much a position as a being, and there have been other Demiurges for other planets in Marvel lore. Indeed, there will be other Earthly Demiurges in future - Scarlet Witch's son Billy Kaplan is destined to become the next Demiurge, rewriting the laws of reality and magic on Earth.
