Supernatural villain, the Leviathans. The Akrida are a brand-new villain in the Supernatural franchise, introduced as the Men of Letters' mortal enemy in The Winchesters. Despite being original monsters, as more information is revealed about the Akrida throughout The Winchesters season 1, the more similar they become to the Leviathan.

The Leviathans first appeared in Supernatural season 7, serving as one of the major villains of the franchise. After being accidentally released from Purgatory by Castiel, the Leviathans began their schemes to take over Earth. As God's first creation, the Leviathan possessed incredible power, so much power that God locked them away in Purgatory for fear of the damage they could cause. Despite sounding intimidating on paper, the Leviathans ultimately fell flat, becoming Supernatural's most disappointing villains. Even Supernatural acknowledged the villains were a flop, making several jokes about them throughout the remainder of the series.

The Akrida And Leviathan’s Goals Were To Take Over The World

Supernatural Leviathan

The Akrida and the Leviathans share many similarities on the surface. They're both powerful entities that possess the ability to take over human forms, they entered our world from another plane of existence, are notoriously difficult to kill, and follow a single leader, the Leviathans follow Dick Roman and the Akrida follow Rockin' Roxy. The most dangerous similarity between them both, however, is their aspiration to take over the world. While the Leviathan escaped Purgatory to take their "rightful" place on Earth as God's first creation, the Akrida have been fighting to enter the world for centuries, held back only by the Men of Letters.

So Far, The Akrida Aren’t As Annoying As The Leviathan

Despite their striking similarities, the Leviathan and the Akrida also have their differences, mainly, the Akrida make for a far less annoying villain. The Leviathan arc is arguably Supernatural's worst, the storyline is disted and the Leviathan's goals frequently got muddled up in confusing side stories, ranging from curing cancer to getting Sam and Dean Winchester arrested. Dick Roman, meant to be the Leviathan's mightiest leader, fell short of being a ably intimidating villain. Even the method of killing the Leviathans, Borax, felt rather uninspired compared to The Winchesters' Akrida and the Monster Box.

Now, The Winchesters' Akrida possesses the potential to do what the Leviathan arc never really achieved, telling a cohesive story. The Akrida's goals are clear; spawning rare, powerful magical beings in order to harvest their essence to aid in their plot to take over Earth once and for all. Armed with a less annoying leader, a clearer storyline, and a fascinating centuries-long rivalry, the Akrida can take the best parts of the Leviathan to provide The Winchesters with a formidable villain, if they can avoid the pitfalls of their disappointing predecessors.
