best medical dramas of all time. The show's unique, hour-by-hour premise is just one of many draws the streaming series has.

The Pitt season 2 getting confirmed halfway through season 1. However, what caught my eye about the 15-episode debut season was just how different it was from other medical dramas, something that's changed my perception of the genre as a whole.

The Pitt Is So Realistic, It May Have Ruined Other Medical Dramas For Me

I Am Enthralled By How True-To-Life The Series Is

The Pitt's medical realism is the biggest reason why it stands out from other medical dramas. The show never shies away from the bloodier side of trauma hospitals, with episode 1 establishing this through the gory foot injury sustained by one of the very first patients. Scenarios that are difficult to watch play out all the time in the series, such as a college student dying of an overdose and blood-soaked emergency medical procedures happening with sudden necessity. I appreciated how much the show stayed true to life by never flinching from its most difficult cases.

The Pitt Can Finally End A Disappointing 5-Year Streak For Max’s Original Shows

The Pitt has a strong chance of finally ending a disappointing five-year streak for Max original shows, all thanks to its huge initial popularity.

However, this approach may also have ruined other medical dramas for me, especially those airing right now. Unlike other medical dramas, The Pitt's hospital harsh realities demonstrate respect for real-world medical professionals by being as honest about procedures as possible. Nothing is overly dramatized, and when major events do transpire, they're grounded by the realistic setting. It makes the overarching narrative of the hourly shift that much more interesting, as it feels like a genuine glimpse into a setting many medical dramas don't always accurately portray.

Traditional Medical Dramas Are Fun, But The Pitt Offers Something Else

A Deeper Glimpse Behind-The-Scenes That Feels More True-To-Life

Other medical dramas do offer fun and interesting takes on the profession, even if they're not as realistic. Grey's Anatomy season 21 is an ongoing example of this, providing some relatively realistic medical ideas with a focus on character drama. The same goes for shows like the aforementioned Doc, whose plot involves the protagonist having amnesia surrounding the last eight years of her life. These types of dramas have their place in the genre, as they provide different perspectives that rely on unique attributes of character drama to outline their stories.

While plenty of other medical dramas embrace realism for some of their cases, the Max series stands out to me because it offers a constantly-evolving environment that doesn't shy away from some of the darker, more brutal aspects of the practice.

The Pitt, on the other hand, creates a story that is heavily focused on the patients instead of just the characters. The medical realism is one of the most important attributes of the show, in particular the way in which the series depicts true-to-life cases in a busy hospital environment. While plenty of other medical dramas embrace realism for some of their cases, the Max series stands out to me because it offers a constantly-evolving environment that doesn't shy away from some of the darker, more brutal aspects of the practice.

What Other Medical Shows Can Learn From The Pitt

They Can Embrace More Realistic Stories Too

Everything from reviewed The Pitt for ScreenRant, I believe other medical shows can learn from its approach to the genre, potentially even offering more realistic stories of their own. Its success could help enhance other shows like it, as they are informed about how they can successfully approach their stories from more lifelike angles.

I'm afraid The Pitt has ruined other medical dramas for me simply because of how well it approaches its realistic setting and cases. It's something I think other medical dramas could learn from, too, potentially inspiring them to depict their cases in ways that reflect real life more accurately. With season 2 now on the horizon, it's likely the Max original series will continue to embrace its medical realism, hopefully inspiring other shows in the genre to follow suit.

The Pitt season 2 is slated to arrive on Max in Janaury 2026.
