From the Gelflings and Podlings to the Skeksis and whatever Mother Aughra is, there are innumerable characters in the show that we have come to love (or despise). We have taken some of the most important roles in this show and matched them with their most suitable alignment according to the system used by Dungeons & Dragons.

All-Maudra - Lawful Good (Crusader)

All-Maudra - Lawful Good Cropped

The All-Maudra, Mayrin, is initially depicted as a willing subordinate to the Skeksis, accepting their rule in exchange for certain gifts provided for her service. However, she does not waver from the laws that bind her citizens, insisting that they supply the Skeksis with the demanded bounty from their lands, and if they could not provide, they were asked to submit something else of equal value.

However, through her daughter Brea, Mayrin comes to realize the predatory nature of the Skeksis: and openly defies their rule as tyrannical, proving herself to be a truly comionate person. Unfortunately, she pays the ultimate price for her crusading: death.

Deet - Neutral Good (Benefactor)

Deet - Neutral Good Cropped

Deethra, or Deet, is at the core of the resistance saga. She is a generous person, giving to others even when she barely has any left for herself. Deet's devotion extends even to strangers, often risking her life for people she has never met before. She embodies the Benefactor, as we see when she absorbs the entirety of the Darkening energy that The Emperor releases from his staff, shielding her friends and allies from certain death.

Immediately after, Deet displays an uncharacteristic bout of rage, reflecting the Darkening back towards the Skeksis and killing one of them. However, this act of sacrifice comes at a deep physical and psychological cost, resulting in terrifying visions in her head, where she sees herself as the tyrant queen of all of Thra.

Rian - Chaotic Good (Rebel)

Rian - Chaotic Good Cropped

Rian is a kindhearted soul, always seeking to help others in distress, as we see when he enters the caves under the Skeksis castle to look for Mira (even though there was a dangerous Arathim running around). As altruistic as he is, Rian is also somewhat restless with his post as a guard, getting upset when his father refuses to give him a position of responsibility.

Rian does not always follow the rules, often stealing food meant for the Skeksis, resulting in the cooks getting punished for his behavior. His chaotic persona is part of the free spirit trapped in his body; we observe this when he decides to flee Stonewood after Maudra Fara orders his imprisonment. These features are why we classify him as a rebel.

Maudra Fara - Lawful Neutral (Judge)

Maudra Fara - Lawful Neutral Cropped

Maudra Fara is the strong-willed leader of the Stonewood Clan, leading her people to victory innumerable times. Fara shows her potential as a leader when she challenges Seladon, heir to the Gelfling throne, for her position, claiming that Seladon was not worthy to become the ruler.

Fara conducted her court in an unbiased manner, asking Rian to prove his story before she decided to hand him over to the Skeksis. However, even she was not immune to the false promises made by their overlords, as seen when she brings in Ordon, Rian's father, to convince him to willingly accept his fate. As a Judge, Fara lives her life by a strict code and expects the same code to be adhered to by her citizens.

Mother Aughra - True Neutral (Undecided)

Mother Aughra - True Neutral Cropped

Mother Aughra is the spirit of Thra itself and therefore cannot take sides. This is depicted when she heals a little insect, an Arathim spy, even though it had just tried to control her mind, saying, "Aughra cares for all the children of Thra." She is also distant in nature, preferring to spend her life looking through the telescopic observatory built for her by the UrSkeks.

Her desire to contemplate the mysteries of the universe led her away from her true purpose, the protection of Thra, and was a direct cause of the horrific events that took place during the series. Being an Undecided type, Aughra rarely took the time to understand the needs of the lesser denizens of her world, usually rejecting their complaints as tedious or annoying.

The Heretic - Chaotic Neutral (Free Spirit)

The Heretic - Chaotic Neutral Cropped

The Heretic was once the supreme leader of all the Skeksis, known as SkekGra the conqueror. His violent tendencies resulted in death and destruction all around Thra, until the Crystal revealed to him his true nature: that he was merely half of one being, which led him to find his missing soulmate, UrGoh, the Wanderer.

The Heretic is the definition of a Free Spirit, spending all of his time in a messy tent atop the highest peak in the Crystal Desert. Along with UrGoh, The Heretic consumes vast amounts of hallucinogenic materials, which caused his incredibly eccentric personality, as we see when he reacts aggressively to the Gelfling calling him a Skeksis but immediately laughing it off saying that he is a "fun Skeksis."

Seladon - Lawful Evil (Dominator)

Seladon - Lawful Evil Cropped

Seladon becomes the new All-Maudra after her mother is murdered by the Skeksis, but rejects the notions of the Gelfling, desiring to be more like the Skeksis. She is terribly insecure due to Mayrin's formal treatment of her (even though this was because Mayrin was preparing her to be a rational ruler). Seladon is a classic Dominator; she expects all of the Gelfling to bow down to her, and even arrogantly informs the other Maudras that she was the absolute ruler.

However, her naivety regarding the true intentions of the Skeksis, whom she idolizes, leads her to a miserable fate. When she goes to submit her authority to The Emperor and beg for mercy for her people, the Skeksis violently abuse her while laughing at her desire to be queen.

The Chamberlain - Neutral Evil (Malefactor)

The Chamberlain from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

The Chamberlain, SkekSil, is arguably the most important character in the show, given his cunning manipulation of both Skeksis and Gelfling. His treachery knows no bounds. On one side he pretends to be an ally to the Gelfling, while on the other, he fawns before The Emperor, begging for scraps at the table.

As a Malefactor, The Chamberlain only seeks to serve his own desires, committing malicious acts, such as consuming Mira's essence while taunting a distraught Rian, simply because he wanted to experience Rian's misery. He is evil for evil's sake, and cares nothing about loss or gain, as we see when he callously murders The General after spending a considerable amount of time convincing him that he was his only friend.

The Hunter - Chaotic Evil (Destroyer)

The Hunter - Chaotic Evil Cropped

The Hunter is the most violent of all the Skeksis, as he often claims, and he lives only for the glory of the hunt and nothing more. In that regard, Aughra considered him to be the noblest of the Skeksis, as only he was true to the nature of his kind.

The Hunter's aggression is only matched by his greed, performing acts of brutality and destruction that even his fellow Skeksis were terrified of him. The Hunter is the perfect example of Chaotic Evil, being so sure of himself that he refuses to consider the consequences of his actions, like when he casually flicks an innocent Dousan off the edge of a cliff as a negotiating tactic.
