At first sight, it might seem like Game of Thrones don't have a lot of things in common. One is an ittedly soapy, yet generally faithful re-telling of the life of the British Monarchy. The other is an epic fantasy tale of power and control, full of magic and action. Upon closer inspection, however, one can find more than a few similarities between them.
They both include reluctant characters with power, who struggle and do their best to handle the huge burden that's placed upon them. Some of them could work well together, creating a pairing to be reckoned with. Others would create a toxic combination that would surely end in disaster. It's always fun to imagine, and when the worlds of Westeros and Great Britain collide, the results are bound to be explosive.
Wouldn't Work: Princess Anne & Robb Stark
Together, Robb and Anne would be an explosive combination. Both are stubborn, determined, direct, and unyielding. They like things done their way and generally believe they're always right. And while they might make sense on paper, as they're both important of prominent families, it would soon become clear they're not right for each other.
Anne would probably disapprove of most of Robb's decisions in the war. For his part, the eldest Stark might dislike how independent and aggressive Anne is. Their union seems like it could turn adversarial quickly.
Would Work: Missandei & Peter Townsend
For all and purposes, Peter is a straight-up man. He is dutiful, loyal, understanding, and ive, qualities he shares with Missandei. The interpreter, for her part, is not only strong-willed and independent but also quite clever, capable of speaking nineteen languages including High Valyrian.
They both know what it's like to be completely devoted to someone else, having a sense of honor and commitment that few others can understand. Peter's quiet, stern demeanor would blend well with Missandei's softer persona. They'd each other and would eventually be able to find the stability they both crave for.
Wouldn't Work: Princess Diana & Jaime Lannister
While Jaime Lannister might seem like a dashing knight in shining armor, the truth is entirely different. He's as flawed a human as any other, one who also happens to harbor a forbidden and consuming love for his twin sister. Princess Diana desires to be loved above all things and is constantly searching for someone to make her feel safe and protected.
While Jaime might be drawn to how vulnerable yet spirited Diana is, and she seems like she'd enjoy his strength and courage, a connection between them likely wouldn't last.
Would Work: Daenerys Targaryen & Princess Margaret
Daenerys is, first and foremost, a conqueror. She has an unbreakable faith in herself and believes she's the only one who can break the wheel of power that dominates over Westeros. Margaret, although quite comfortable with the Monarchy, still resents the institution that has her subordinate to someone who she believes is ill-fitted to be Queen.
Together, Daenerys and Margaret would be unstoppable. True, they'd also be chaotic, as they're both slightly volatile. However, they'd also encourage each other to aim even higher. They'd have fun together, actually enjoying the rewards of all their hard work. Margaret would do wonders for Dany's conquest campaigns, while the Mother of Dragons would provide the excitement that Margaret craves for.
Wouldn't Work: Sansa Stark & Prince Charles
In a few simple words, Sansa Stark would eat Prince Charles alive. The perpetually hunched Prince of Wales sees himself as an old bohemian soul trapped in a tragic life of loss and regret. The younger Sansa might have fallen for his tales of romance, but not the Queen in the North.
Older Sansa would have no time for Charles' regrets. She'd see right through him and call him out on his immaturity and lack of seriousness and commitment. For his part, he'd take offense at her suggestions and back away from the relationship, once again playing the victim. They would end things in a very negative way, sooner rather than later.
Would Work: Tony Armstrong-Jones & Renly Baratheon
Tony and Renly are both charming scoundrels. They enjoy the finer things in life, the luxuries that come with a rank and title. They'd have no problem enjoying themselves and would live fully, in stark contrast to the scheming and conflicted figures they usually have around them.
Their considerable charisma and ease with words would make the common folk fall quickly in love with them. They'd be recognized as a pairing to be respected, and maybe even feared, because of all the devotion they inspire.
Wouldn't Work: Margaret Thatcher & Tywin Lannister
Thatcher and Lannister would be a match made in hell. Neither Margaret nor Tywin can it their own faults, each of them thinking they possess the absolute truth. Prideful, stubborn, controlling, and selfish, they pretend to be acting for the good of others, when in reality they're just servicing themselves.
Their union would be completely political. However, it wouldn't be surprising if they were each plotting ways to get rid of the other. Ruthless and iron-tempered, they'd fight to the death until one of them lost everything. Who'd be the first to fall?
Would Work: Olenna Tyrell & Lord Mountbatten
Another political union, this one would be far more successful than the previous one. Mountbatten, ever the social-climber, would understand his role as Olenna Tyrell's husband. He'd use his position to get himself more power, though, but always under the guise of a dutiful husband.
The Queen of Thorns would of course realize what kind of man she's married to, and wouldn't be blind to his attempts to acquire influence. She'd allow it because it would be under her . Together, they'd bring strength and stability to House Tyrell, creating the perfect arrangement and allowing the rose to keep growing strong.
Wouldn't Work: Cersei Lannister & Prince Philip
If there's one thing Prince Philip hates, it's feeling emasculated by his wife. If there's one thing Cersei hates, is being told what to do. These two would maybe find each other attractive, and could maybe even try to have a relationship. In the end, though, their explosive tempers would doom the whole thing.
Cersei would try to always be in control, especially after being married to Robert for so long. Philip would try to assert his authority every step of the way and Cersei would find new and original ways to crush him. In the end, Philip can be obstinate and prejudiced but he's not cruel, whereas cruelty is all Cersei knows.
Would Work: Queen Elizabeth & Jon Snow
Level-headed, stoic, and gallant, Jon Snow is very much a hero. His honor is so great, it won't even allow him to lie. He's brave and chivalrous, even if just a tad reckless. Queen Elizabeth would find a lot to ire in this honorable fool and would be easily swept off her feet by the dashing Bastard of Winterfell.
Elizabeth would likely approve of Jon's sternness and resolve, whilst iring his commitment to truth and integrity. He would find comfort in her safe and dutiful traditionalism, especially after how unlucky he's been in love. Together, they'd be the picture of stability. And while some might find them boring, it's clear that, when it comes to King and Queens, boring might be the way to go.
