It seems that Superman's ultimate destiny is to revive Krypton is an unconventional way. A surprising history lesson hints that the Man of Steel could one day bring the long-dead planet back in a way fans won't see coming.
It's one of the most iconic superhero origins of all time: long before he came to Earth, baby Kal-El lived on the planet Krypton with his parents. His father, Jor-El, a scientist, knew that Krypton's days were numbered, but despite his protests and attempts to be heard, he was shut out. In order to protect his child, Jor-El sent Kal-El away from Krypton to a planet far away so that he could live. The baby landed safely on Earth and grew up to be one of the best heroes in the DC Universe. However, Superman can't help but wonder what it would have been like to live on Krypton.
Superman's Ancestor Used Strength To Defeat The Evil 'Uthor'
However, a glimpse at the past could tell fans what they can expect of Superman’s future. In Superman #709 by J. Michael Straczynski, Chris Roberson, Eddy Barrows, and Allan Goldman, the Big Blue Boy Scout’s walk across the United States continues. While he tries to make up with Lois after a fight, Superman notices a strange sound that he eventually recognizes as the Kryptonian language. Clark discovers that the Flash is trapped under the influence of a Kryptonian sunstone that’s filling Flash’s brain up with the history of Krypton. As part of Barry Allen's unstoppable chatter, he details the early years of Krypton, revealing that one of Clark's oldest descendants, Erok-El, overthrew a warlord known as 'Uthor' before founding the first modern city of Krypton.
It’s almost certainly not a coincidence that Krypton began in earnest after one of Superman’s ancestors helped rid the world of a villain. And the fact that the warlord’s name resembles Lex Luthor’s reinforces the idea that the DC Universe is very cyclical. The events that have happened relatively recently in the DCU have usually happened before and will likely happen again. And if that’s the case, then Superman is well on his way to resurrecting Krypton should he ever defeat Lex Luthor for good.
With (L)uthor's Defeat, The True Krypton Was Born
If DC does, in fact, repeat its history, and Superman does one day defeat his longtime enemy, then Clark could follow in the footsteps of Erok-El. In the same way that Uthor being overthrown led to the formation of a prosperous new era and Krypton’s birth, Superman conquering his enemy could lead to him uniting the planet. After all, who’s stood in the way of Superman more than Lex? A new age of prosperity could turn Earth into a new ‘Krypton’ of sorts. Maybe not the one that Clark came from, but one that’s founded on the principles of truth and justice, just like Krypton was. Superman may not be able to bring the original Krypton back, but he may be able to make Earth a bit more like his home planet in its heyday.
