Warning! Spoilers ahead for Superman #11!It's not just Superman that has to worry about kryptonite anymore. Superman and Lex Luthor's latest villains are finally making their most daring move to take revenge by attacking the Man of Steel's city. But they're using a particularly insidious form of kryptonite that Superman's newest ally had a hand in creating.
In Superman #11 by Joshua Williamson and David Baldeón, the Lex Luthor Revenge Squad attacks Supercorp. Mister Graft uses red kryptonite to enrage Superman enough to attack Lex in prison.
Thankfully, Lex uses green kryptonite to negate the red kryptonite's effects. Unfortunately, Graft is one step ahead and releases a cloud of synthetic kryptonite gas on Metropolis that is just as deadly to humans as it is to Superman. To make matters worse, Lex reveals that he created this kryptonite years before.
Lex Luthor Has Made Kryptonite That Can Easily Kill Humans and Superman
Ever since Lex Luthor and Superman teamed up to make improvements to Metropolis, their efforts have been stymied by the enigmatic Doctor Pharm and Mister Graft. Lex revealed that Pharm and Graft were two of his oldest enemies from Lex's early days as a hero in Metropolis. However, Graft told a different story, one that painted Lex as a traitor who deserved to pay for his past sins. To get the revenge Graft and Pharm desired, they formed a small cadre of villains made up of people who'd been hurt by Lex and even tried to recruit Superman onto the team.
Synthetic kryptonite has been hinted throughout the current Superman arc with Graft's signature weapon, the Kryptonite Klaw. Graft has used it to harm people other than Kryptonians, though it wasn't clear how. Lex also previously revealed that he used kryptonite as a contingency against the powerful villain, the Chained. But it hadn't been revealed that Lex developed kryptonite that could be used against everyone and now it could be too late to do anything about it. If this new variant of kryptonite is as deadly as Graft says it is, Superman's city is in serious danger.
This New Kryptonite is as Deadly to Humans as It is to Superman
Graft pointed out that kryptonite can be dangerous to humans over time, but thanks to Lex, this modified version will poison humans almost immediately. And yes, synthetic kryptonite hurts Kryptonians just as bad as the regular kind (not to mention, Superman is still on the mend from his last brush with kryptonite). With humans and the Super-Family vulnerable to this new type of kryptonite, this is a game-changer for villains who could potentially use this new kryptonite as a horrifying bioweapon. That is unless Superman finds some way to stop it.
Superman #11 is on sale now from DC Comics.
