A terrifying Doctor Strange variant appeared in a recent What If...? episode, transforming himself into perhaps the most powerful Sorcerer Supreme seen so far in the MCU. Many other versions beyond Doctor Strange exist in Marvel Comics, all awesome in power and with as much potential for more as the Dark Strange himself.

Some Sorcerer Supreme variants exist within the expanded Marvel multiverse established in the What If..? comics, including some fantastic versions that would be ideal for the MCU. Others come from Earth-616's long history, going back to before civilization and the very origins of magic in the Marvel Universe.

Avengers: Secret Wars. These variants could take a page from Marvel Comics and debut powerful characters that combine different icons into a new one, as often happens. These fusions include Iron Man and Doctor Doom Sorcerers Supreme, among others. Less well-known but equally powerful characters also could take the spot, especially Clea. She debuted in the new movie and her comic book history includes currently holding the prestigious title.

Nina The Conjuror

Nina The Conjuror brandishes swords in Marvel Comics.

Nina The Conjuror served as Sorcerer Supreme in mainline Marvel Comics continuity in the 1950s. She trained for some time with the sorcerer Merlin, learning to conure complex spells and manipulate energy on massive scales. She also brandished very unique weapons.

Nina used enchanted firearms that served simultaneously as guns and swords. More than that, they fired magical bullets, making them very dangerous against supernatural opponents.

Urthona

Urthona fighting aliens in Doctor Strange #81 comic book.

Urthona possessed substantial mystical power, including the ability to conjure weapons and defenses like shields. His knowledge extended to the cosmic scale, as he hailed from another planet, Gevaltu. Despite his considerable power, he didn't earn the Sorcerer Supreme title but claimed it for his own.

Urthona used his magic to rip the Sanctum Santorum from Earth to his planet. He then declared himself Sorcerer Supreme, leading to an impressive battle with Doctor Strange.

Iron Man

The Tony Stark from Earth-9810 combined Doctor Strange's magical powers and Iron Man's inventive genius. This Sorcerer Supreme emerged in What If..? #113 when Stark, who felt responsible for Strange's car accident, developed Sorcerer Armor. The armor allowed Stark to battle against Dormammu by coming with a hard drive of magical spells and enchanted weaponry.

Though this variant shared essentially the same powers as the 616 Doctor Strange, the armor gave him additional defensive measures including lasers and missiles.

Loki

Loki uses his powers as the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel Comics.

Loki becomes the Sorcerer Supreme in a surprising twist in the main Marvel continuity. With all the magical powers Loki enjoys in the comics, including casting illusions, masking his identity, and creating duplicates, the Eye of Agamotto as well as the Cloak of Levitation make Loki even more powerful.

The Cloak of Levitation allows Loki to fly into battle with a sentient cape, while the Eye gives him an almost cosmic perception into other realms and dimensions.

Zhered-Na

Zhered-Na is banished from Atlantis in Marvel Comics.

Zhered-Na reigned as the Sorceress Supreme in the ancient past when she was the most powerful sorceress in Atlantis. She possessed the ability to astrally project herself through several realities and dimensions, as well as summon the spirits of ancient figures like Agamotto.

Zhered-Na once also came forward in time to help Doctor Strange and other Sorcerers Supreme guide the Ancient One to the Well of Longing. Based on circumstantial evidence in the MCU, it appears that Zhered-Na or perhaps another Atlantean sorceress could be Agatha Harkness' mother.

Necrom

Necrom fights Rachel Summers Phoenix in Marvel Comics.

The ancient being Necrom comes from another dimension where he served as the Sorcerer Supreme. He creates as well as calls forward demons from other dimensions to fight on his behalf. For a brief time after his battle with Rachel Summers as the Phoenix Force's host, he wielded all her cosmic power.

Even without that extraordinary power, he created convincing illusions that he used to deceive others. Necrom looms large in the tradition of powerful mystics in Marvel Comics since he instructed both Merlyn and Feron.

Kulan Gath

Kulan Gath uses his powers in Savage Avengers comics.

Kulan Gath demonstrated vast supernatural ability and knowledge. He manipulated reality and time, making himself more and more powerful by consuming other magicians' hearts. This shocking behavior fit in with the violent Hyborian Age he hailed from, during Conan The Barbarian and Red Sonja's time.

Kulan Gath's power over time landed him in the present-day Marvel Universe and required all the skills of both Doctor Strange and others to defeat him.

Brother Voodoo

Brother Voodoo uses his powers in Marvel Comics.

Brother Voodoo ed his spirit with his twin brother's, transforming him into a powerful conduit to the supernatural. He mastered voodoo magic, including the power to not only speak to the dead but also raise them. Jericho Drumm also connects to and manipulates souls, something few magical s can do in Marvel Comics.

When Doctor Strange lost the Sorcerer Supreme title, Brother Voodoo earned the mantle. His extensive power, knowledge, and strong moral code made him the ideal candidate for the job.

Clea

Clea uses magical powers in Marvel Comics.

Comic book fans know Clea studied magic with Doctor Strange. She also inherited extraordinary magical abilities from her mother, and her uncle, Dormammu. These include demon binding, which renders powerful demonic entities powerless, as well as creating other living beings, as she did with Ardina.

Clea's exceptional power and knowledge led her to assume the Sorcerer Supreme mantle in Earth-616 recently. Doctor Strange died, leaving her the best choice to fill the role.

Dr. Strangefate

Dr Strangefate uses his powers in Amalgam Comics.

Dr. Strangefate combines Doctor Strange's magical power from Marvel and Dr. Fate's from DC Comics. What's more, in the fused reality of Amalgam Comics, he also wielded Charles Xavier's powerful telepathy. Comic book fans know Doctor Fate possesses truly stagger mystical power, making this variant truly supreme in comics.

As the Darkness of the Divine Conduit, Dr. Strangefate can assume another cosmic or mystical entity's power, adding their ability to his own and making him even more powerful.
