Stranger Things season 5's story being the end of the hit Netflix show, Dustin's fate and whether he could have a future beyond the series finale remains uncertain.

While speaking with RadioTimes.com, Matarazzo revealed that Stranger Things season 5 will be a proper bookend to Dustin's story, but is open to the possibility of a spinoff. He hinted at how Dustin's journey will reach a satisfying conclusion while also discussing potential avenues he would like to see further explored in a spinoff featuring Dustin. The star also emphasized the necessary conditions needed for such a continuation to happen. Check out his comments below:

It definitely will be a bookend. I think it will wrap up really nicely. And I don't think Matt Ross will want to approach anything like that for a long time. So if you were to ask me a year from now if I wanted to come back, I'd probably be like, "I’m gonna do some other stuff for a bit initially," but who knows what it's going to be like.

I would love to see, potentially, if there's a continuation of Dustin after [season] 5, if any of us make it up to that point, I would love to see what would happen, what Dustin would be like as a 30-year-old. And I would love to see at tackling that, it could be a lot of fun.

I'd be interested in seeing what their concept would be, but yeah, I’m absolutely open to anything. If it's good and it's exciting and other people are excited about doing it, absolutely. I would like to branch off and do some other stuff initially, I think for the next few years at least.

What This Means For Stranger Things' Future

Dustin Will Have A Satisfying Ending That Doesn't Need A Followup

Despite his openness to potentially continuing Dustin's story, Matarazzo's comments indicate that season 5 will be the end of the Stranger Things character's journey. Given the many delays the final season has faced, along with Matarazzo and the rest of the cast having played their respective characters for nearly a decade now, the focus is understandably on bringing a satisfying conclusion to the series, and not on potential spinoffs. This bodes well for season 5 being focused on delivering a worthy ending for its characters instead of focusing on setting up new stories.

Gaten Matarazzo was 13 years old when Stranger Things season 1 was filmed and is now 22 years old.

Matarazzo is careful ing phrases like "if any of us make it up to that point" to avoid spoilers, but the fact that he is satisfied with the bookend of Dustin's story bodes well for the character's chance of surviving. It would be more difficult to entertain the possibility of a 30-year-old Dustin if the character died in season 5. Dustin's mother not returning for season 5 may be another sign of his survival, as it is difficult to imagine her not being in the final season if her son died.

Our Take On Gaten Matarazzo's Comments

Stranger Things Season 5 Will Be Worth The Wait

I am glad to hear that Matarazzo feels that season 5 wraps up his story well and that there are no current plans for a spinoff. The game-changing twists in Stranger Things season 4's ending set up a thrilling final chapter for Dustin and the other surviving characters, and it is more important to deliver a rewarding ending than it is to see the series continue indefinitely. Dustin has been one of Stranger Things' funniest and most heartfelt characters, and it is time to see how his story culminates, and for Matarazzo to explore more new career opportunities.
