Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventure's "Yoda's Mission."
Star Wars prequels that Yoda used a lightsaber on-screen for the first time.
More precisely, Yoda only ignited a lightsaber in a Star Wars film for the first time in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. Since The Empire Strikes Back, audiences had theorized what Yoda’s fighting style looked like, and whether he even had a lightsaber. Now, 21 years after Attack of the Clones, Star Wars has shown Yoda’s very first lightsaber.
Yoda Gives His Training Lightsaber Away In Young Jedi Adventures
As one of the oldest Star Wars characters, Yoda can easily appear in High Republic stories. That is the case for Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, in which Yoda serves as a link between the established Star Wars universe and the new characters. Yoda taught Jedi younglings for centuries, using all of his knowledge to guide the new generation of Jedi. At the end of Young Jedi Adventures’ “Yoda’s Mission,” Master Yoda even gave his first lightsaber away to reward Kai Brightstar, a brave youngling. Kai lost his original blue lightsaber during a mission, but Yoda was proud of how altruistic the youngling was.
Unlike Obi-Wan calling out Anakin for always losing his lightsaber, Yoda appreciated how Kai was focused on saving his friends. When giving Kai a new lightsaber, Yoda specifically mentioned that the blade was his own “training lightsaber.” Assuming that Yoda had never picked up a Jedi weapon before ing the Jedi Order, Star Wars just revealed Yoda’s first lightsaber. Even adult Yoda used a relatively small lightsaber, meaning that his first laser sword was perfect for a Jedi youngling. Interestingly, Yoda’s first lightsaber was also green. It seems that, unlike Luke Skywalker or Ahsoka Tano, Yoda used the same lightsaber color throughout his entire Jedi career.
When Did Yoda Train With His First Lightsaber?
According to Master Yoda, he was the same age as Kai Brightstar when he received his first lightsaber. Kai and the Young Jedi Adventures characters should be around 6 and 8 years old. However, it must be noticed that Yoda’s species live much longer than humans. Therefore, what Yoda re as the “same age” as Kai could actually be a much bigger number in of “human years.” As a comparison, Grogu, the “Baby Yoda,” was 53 years old during The Mandalorian. Considering that The Mandalorian begins in 9 ABY, Grogu was 25 years old during Order 66 and was still a padawan.
Yoda’s Star Wars backstory has been a mystery since the inception of the character in The Empire Strikes Back. George Lucas never revealed Yoda’s species or home planet, not even after introducing Yaddle in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. This is now changing with the High Republic Era. Some of those stories, including Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, have shown a bit more about Yoda’s life before the Skywalker saga, although there is still a lot to be revealed about the iconic Jedi Master.
