Though Star Wars: Squadrons have been out for about a month now, the reviews for the game have been pretty up in the air. It seems like fans of the franchise and general flight simulators find the game pretty fun, as the combat and gameplay totally make the player feel as though they are apart of the fight against the Rebel Alliance and the Empire in that galaxy far, far away.
However, many other fans have found it a bit lackluster. Flight simulators are pretty hard to get into so people who aren't fans may not find it as appealing, and fans who were expecting this story to tie into the wider canon may be sorely disappointed, as the game focuses on new characters and a time period many fans aren't familiar with.
Famous Space Battles
One of the most interesting aspects of Star Wars is the huge space battles that fans get to see throughout the films. Usually, these battles are interrupted by the main characters as they are accomplishing other goals, such as the cuts to Jyn Erso trying to find the Death Star plans or Luke Skywalker fighting against the Emperor and Darth Vader in the second Death Star during the Battle of Endor.
While these cuts from space battle to characters are extremely important, it also cuts audiences off from seeing a space battle from start to finish during movies (except for the Battle of Yavin, of course.) It would have been amazing if Squadrons had a special game mode where players can relive those famous space battles but through their own eyes as extra pilots.
New Canon Characters
Though this point isn't about the movies, it is about the new official canon Disney has introduced. Throughout the new canon novels and games, there have been a few new faces that would have perfectly fit into Squadrons and the themes of the game.
For example, it would have been pretty amazing to see anyone from Jedi: Fallen Order make a small cameo in the game, after all, it can be assumed that Cal Kestis and the Mantis crew are still alive. Battlefront II also takes place shortly after the Battle of Endor and has that amazing dynamic of Empire versus the Rebels with Iden Versio who struggles between both sides.
The Skywalkers
Though it makes sense that neither Luke nor Leia were in the game very much (save for a few mentions and a transmission at the beginning of the game), it also would have been incredibly nice to see either of them, considering fans don't really know what the twins did after the Battle of Endor.
Fans of the comics will know that Leia went to help the New Republic, and Luke decides to travel the galaxy, but if the Rebels and the New Republic were in trouble, it would have made sense for the both of them to be there.
The Mandalorian
Though the series is shortly after the Battle of Endor (rather than the five years after like The Mandalorian) it would have been interesting to see some kind of sign that may tie in the Empire just after the Emperor's fall, to the Empire we see in the Disney+ series.
The Empire is still extremely relevant in both series, which just shows that they don't give up easily. After Return of the Jedi, many fans just assumed that the fall of Palpatine also meant freedom in the galaxy, but these two forms of media do not agree. It would have been interesting to see or hear of Moff Gideon or the Great Purge of Mandalore.
Hera's Child
While the inclusion of Hera Syndulla, captain of the Ghost ship from Star Wars Rebels was amazing and exciting, it also would have been even more amazing if fans were able to catch sight of her son. Fans know that Hera aided the Rebels every step of the way against the Empire during the war. She was at the Battle of Scarif and the Battle of Endor, fighting alongside the rebels as one of the best pilots in the galaxy.
But fans of the series also know that she now has a green-haired son, the son of Kanan Jarrus, named Jacen. Jacen was born the same year as the Battle of Yavin, which would have made him about four or five years old during the events of Star Wars: Squadrons. Obviously, Hera wouldn't take the young boy into battle, but it does beg the question, where was he?
The Millennium Falcon
Another idea that would have been amazing for Squadrons would have been definitely the most famous ship in the galaxy and the fanbase.
It would have been amazing if players were able to play at least one mission of piloting the famous ship just to get the first-hand experience of what it is like.
Other Rebels/Imperials
Though fans got to see Hera and Leia (for a brief moment) it would have been really nice to see other famous Rebels and Imperials, such as Lando Calrissian or Han Solo.
While many of the Imperials were killed during or between the Battle of Yavin and Endor, it still would have also been interesting to see more familiar faces in the fight for the galaxy, especially in this time of uncertainty.
The First Signs Of The First Order
While the First Order from the sequel trilogy still has a long way to go to rise to power and rule the galaxy, it would have been incredibly interesting to see the smallest of inklings of foreshadowing to the First Order.
In Star Wars: Bloodline, the book ends with the rise of the new regime, however, it makes it abundantly clear that this rise had been long since planned out by the inner workings of those involved. It would have been incredibly interesting if the Empire in this game had mentioned this new project or the idea of a new regime.
Endor
Because the game begins after the Battle of Endor, seeing the moon filled with Ewoks and Rebels would have been pretty fun to see. Fans could have seen their character celebrating the fall of the Emperor and second Death Star or could have seen the giant space station being destroyed and abandoned from space.
It would have been an interesting sight to see all the Imperials leaving the craft to try and escape as the Rebels destroy it since fans have pretty much only ever seen that moment from Luke and Anakin's perspective.
More Droids
While the inclusion of mouse and gonk droids, and their interactions, was amazing, it would have been even better with more droids running around the bases. Firstly, Chopper should have been with Hera as he had stayed by her side throughout the war and remained Hera's astromech, begrudgingly fixing the Ghost and maybe even aiding Hera in taking care of Jacen.
There were many C1 units floating around the Rebel base, but no Chopper. It also would have been interesting if there were more options to customize the player's astromech rather than just have another R2 unit.
