New Jedi Order story will be set 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and feature Rey rebuilding the band of Force warriors that have been lost since the prequels.
Other cast and potential stories like The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter, many are still intrigued by the possibilities of bringing the legacy of the Skywalkers back to the big screen via Rey. After not being provided in Star Wars canon thus far, the legacy of one Skywalker specifically, Leia, could be a focus of Rey's journey.
The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Left Leia Without A Legacy
Everything Once Linked To Leia Is Gone
Despite being an inherently vital part of the original Star Wars trilogy, Leia was sadly left without a legacy in the sequels. In George Lucas' initial sequel plans, it was going to be revealed that Leia was the true Chosen One of the Force, not Anakin Skywalker. In contrast to this plan, Leia was somewhat shortchanged in the Star Wars sequels under Disney. While she had a bigger role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and her posthumous role was handled with great respect in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, any lasting legacy Leia built is now gone.

Star Wars: The Chosen One Prophecy Explained
The prophecy of the Chosen One lies at the heart of Star Wars' Skywalker saga - but where did it come from, and how did Anakin Skywalker fulfil it?
Of course, her home planet of Alderaan was destroyed in the original trilogy, but the sequels set up a way for Leia to continue building a legacy. This legacy could have come via the New Republic, yet it was destroyed by the First Order, at the hands of her son, no less. Her husband, Han Solo, could have continued her memory were it not for his death. The Rise of Skywalker then saw both Leia and Ben Solo, her son, fade into the Force, leaving little behind that can tie directly to such an important member of Star Wars' Skywalker family tree.
Rey Has Become Leia's Apprentice, Not Just Luke's
Rey Learned More From Leia Than She Ever Did From Luke
All that said, Rey Skywalker herself could tie into the legacy of Leia Organa. After all, the sequel trilogy revealed Rey trained as a Jedi under Leia for a year, as opposed to only learning from Luke for a few days. In the Visual Dictionary for The Rise of Skywalker, it was noted that Rey's Jedi robes were modeled on Alderaanian designs, tying even closer to Leia. Finally, The Rise of Skywalker also showed Rey burying Leia's lightsaber alongside Luke and Anakin's. Above all else, these things prove how Rey was Leia's apprentice just as much - if not more so - than she was Luke's.
Rey's New Jedi Order Is Leia's True Legacy
Leia Can Live On In The New Generation Of Jedi
Thanks to the impact that Leia had on Rey, the latter's new Jedi Order could be the former's true legacy. Naturally, Rey will be inspired by Luke in rebuilding the Jedi, but it was Leia who had a bigger bearing on her journey as a Jedi in her own right. As such, Rey could choose to honor Leia just as much as Luke with the Jedi Order she will create. How exactly Rey could do this remains to be seen once Star Wars: New Jedi Order is released, but it would be the perfect way to honor Princess Leia Organa.
