Kanan Jarrus and his Padawan, Ezra Bridger, being Jedi, while Sabine Wren is a Mandalorian. There were also arcs all about Mandalore and Mandalorian internal conflicts, which made it interesting to see these two groups working together.

Jedi and Mandalorians had a long history of disagreeing, and after the Darksaber, but more recently in Star Wars, Grogu and Sabine Wren can also be included on that list. However, there is seemingly one debate that not even the Rebels cast can agree on.

Pod Of Rebellion Sparked A Debate Between Which Is Better: Jetpacks Or Lightsabers

The Rebels Cast Is Divided

In the new Rebels rewatch podcast, Ezra Bridger, Taylor Gray, instantly came to the defense of the lightsaber and implied that there was simply no contest between the two. However, Sircar pushed back, stating that the jetpack would help people escape from an adversary, whereas a lightsaber would essentially force someone to fight.

Star Wars Rebels features an amazing cast of live-action and voice-acting all-stars, each who bring an added edge to Star Wars.

As someone who voiced a Mandalorian who effectively used a jetpack, it’s not surprising Sircar argued in favor of the jetpack. However, knowing Sabine’s history with the Darksaber made this particular argument surprising, though welcome. Sabine is a character who, in Ahsoka, was using the best of her skills as a Mandalorian and a Jedi to her advantage, and it’s not so off to say that Sabine (and her actress) would focus on the items that Sabine knows best.

Rebels Showcases The Best Of Both Jetpacks And Lightsabers

Particularly In Season 3

Rebels season 3 really engaged in the Mandalorian side of Star Wars. Not only did we learn more about the Jedi’s history with the Mandalorians, but we learned more about Mandalorian customs and history. Additionally, audiences finally learn more about Sabine Wren’s past and her shame upon building a weapon that hurts her own people. However, the fights against Gar Saxon’s Imperial Supercommandos showed how useful jetpacks can be in a fight, especially one in which you’re outmatched.

Natasha Liu Bordizzo portrays Sabine Wren in live-action titles like Ahsoka.

However, Rebels also had a lot of great lightsabers. Not only did Rebels feature Ezra’s iconic blaster-lightsaber hybrid, but it also showed Imperial Inquisitors, Darth Maul, and Ahsoka Tano in lightsaber duels. It’s also clear that both lightsabers and jetpacks don’t necessarily work well together, based on Ezra Bridger’s inability to master both at the same time in the Rebels season 4 premiere.

This proves that Mandalorian technology is no match for lightsabers.

It's worth mentioning that while Sabine Wren trained with the Darksaber in Rebels season 3, episode 15, “Trials of the Darksaber,” she used Mandalorian tech to try to take on and beat Kanan Jarrus. Though fellow Mandalorian Fenn Rau didn’t provide Sabine with a jetpack, it was clear that while her Mandalorian technology helped surprise the Jedi, it ultimately was no match for him. This proves that Mandalorian technology is no match for lightsabers.

There’s A Clear Winner In This Debate

Lightsabers, Obviously

While jetpacks are clearly a useful tool that shouldn’t be discounted, it’s clear that lightsabers are just better. They can be used for both offense and defense and could literally cut up a jetpack. This point was also brought up by Taylor Gray on Pod of Rebellion, and we can’t help but agree. Lightsabers are some of the best weapons in all science-fiction and fantasy, so comparing them to something like a jetpack really creates little competition.

Debates like these are fun to consider, but they do open up questions about how these tools can work together in order to create better warriors. While Ezra Bridger had little success using a jetpack and lightsaber at the same time, that doesn’t mean Sabine Wren will have the same experience. No matter how one feels about jetpacks or lightsabers, it’s clear that Rebels is the best show to watch to get your fill of both.
