Luke Skywalker to the world of the Jedi, and he begins by gifting Luke his father’s old weapon. Luke spends the majority of their journey to Alderaan training with his new lightsaber under Obi-Wan’s guidance.
Unknown to Luke at the time, Obi-Wan was an incredibly talented warrior during his time as a Jedi Knight. When the movies expanded to include the prequel trilogy, they revealed that Obi-Wan had been an exemplary Jedi in just about every category. His adventures with Anakin, no doubt, gave him lots of time to practice his combat skills! Here are his 10 best duels, when he was given the opportunity to show those skills off.
10 Obi-Wan Vs Darth Vader
The Master Meets His Student Once Again
When Luke and the others sneak aboard the Death Star to rescue Princess Leia, Obi-Wan immediately senses Darth Vader’s presence. To buy the young heroes time, Obi-Wan engages Vader in a one-on-one duel. The choreography of this lightsaber duel leaves a little to be desired, but the drama behind the situation powers the scene. It’s by far the least impressive display of combat skills for either of the two powerful Force-s, but as the first-ever lightsaber duel to be seen on screen, it makes its point pretty efficiently.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's Complete Star Wars Timeline Explained
Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most recognizable characters in Star Wars, meaning he also has an extensive timeline within the franchise.
Besides, Obi-Wan didn’t need to beat Vader in this fight to win. He believed it was up to Luke to defeat Darth Vader. By allowing Vader to strike him down, he could be more help to Luke once he was one with the Force.
9 Rematch With Count Dooku In Revenge of the Sith
Don’t Do It!
Obi-Wan’s second fight against Count Dooku (in the movies, that is) happens during a rescue mission to recover Chancellor Palpatine. Despite Obi-Wan’s confidence and impressive moves, he gets knocked out about halfway through the fight. This leaves Anakin to take the lead on his own.
Unfortunately for the entire Star Wars series, the rescue mission was a trap set by Palpatine, who was actually puppeteering the entire war in order to gain power. When Anakin is vulnerable without the guidance of his unconscious master, Palpatine tempts him into executing Count Dooku. This act of cold-blooded violence further opens the door to Anakin’s struggle against the dark side and sets him up to become Palpatine’s new apprentice soon after.
8 Obi-Wan Vs Pre Vizsla
Introducing The Darksaber
The Darksaber has made a splash in recent Star Wars media, but it has been a significant element since Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Pre Vizsla, a Mandalorian who wished for his culture to return to its warrior roots, wields the Darksaber after it was ed down through his family for generations. The blade is meant to indicate the true ruler of Mandalore, but clearly isn’t a deciding factor in combat against a skilled opponent.

Every Star Wars Character That Has Wielded The Darksaber
The Darksaber is a fabled Mandalorian weapon in Star Wars mythology, but the blade has been wielded by a wide variety of different characters.
Even with the legendary blade, Pre Vizsla wasn’t able to best Obi-Wan. He turned to his agents in the Death Watch to finish him off. Once again, however, Obi-Wan escaped any mortal danger.
7 Obi-Wan & Anakin Vs Count Dooku In Attack of the Clones
The Beginning of the End
After Obi-Wan is rescued on Geonosis, he and Anakin rush to take down Count Dooku. The Sith apprentice had been revealed as the grand architect of the Separatist movement and was adamant about there being a war to follow. In an attempt to cut his plans off early, Obi-Wan and Anakin draw their weapons and attempt to overpower him together.
Unfortunately, Dooku’s skills are too much for the younger Jedi. Dooku had been apprenticed to Yoda and had trained Obi-Wan’s master years before. He simply outmatched Obi-Wan and Anakin, incapacitating Obi-Wan and dismembering Anakin with relative ease. Still, it’s a fun battle to watch, and luckily, Yoda comes to the rescue before Dooku can finish off the two heroes.
6 Obi-Wan Vs Ventress
Combat With A Side Of Snark
As Dooku’s secret apprentice, Asajj Ventress is a recurring antagonist in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. She tends to match Obi-Wan’s witty banter better than any other foe. Their duel in The Clone Wars movie sets up their relationship perfectly, though it’s by no means their last!
Ventress has an interesting story of redemption that ultimately brings her and Obi-Wan together in a fight against Darth Maul and Savage Opress. From her beginning as Dooku’s apprentice to her eventual return to the light, Ventress is an incredibly interesting side character who would no doubt be an exciting addition to Star Wars projects. This has been made possible by Ventress' recent return in Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3.
5 Obi-Wan Vs Darth Maul
Life-Long Enemies
After Darth Maul’s apparent death at Obi-Wan’s hands, his reappearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars came as quite a surprise. Being cut in half was no match for the rage that kept Maul alive, and that rage was always directed at Obi-Wan Kenobi. Their feud lasts until the very end, culminating in a brief duel in Star Wars Rebels.
Though it’s a short fight compared to most of Obi-Wan's other battles, it carries a lot of weight for the characters. Obi-Wan takes Maul down with a single blow, and his nemesis dies in his arms. Maul then asks if Luke is the one who will at last defeat the Sith, and Obi-Wan is able to reassure him of such.
4 Obi-Wan Vs General Grievous
Overcoming Quite The Unfair Advantage
General Grievous is no stranger to fighting Jedi. The robotic general collects the weapons of his vanquished enemies, and can wield four of them at a time. Obi-Wan Kenobi is trusted to track Grievous down and eliminate him, which speaks highly of his combat skills. Obi-Wan’s mission is crucial to the Jedi’s success in the Clone Wars, and he gives it all he’s got. Luckily, he’s every bit the warrior the Jedi Council believes him to be.
Using his own single lightsaber, Obi-Wan dis Grievous little by little until the playing field is a little more even. Though Obi-Wan finishes the fight with a blaster to Grievous’ heart, the two enemies make quite an interesting combat sequence. Grievous’ many arms whirlwind his four lightsabers around with a ferocious speed, sending sparks flying in the midst of their combat.
3 Avenging Anakin In Obi-Wan Kenobi
An Emotional Rematch
A decade after the fall of the Jedi, Obi-Wan is in a self-imposed exile on Tatooine. He believes Anakin is dead… that is, until the horrible truth is revealed to him. A game of cat-and-mouse ensues, and the two former friends eventually reunite for one last fight on a desolate moon. Emotions are running high, which is rare for Obi-Wan. The result is a thrilling and heartbreaking scene that shows Vader in his prime.
Obi-Wan and Vader exchange their acknowledgments of what happened to Anakin, and Obi-Wan is finally able to reconnect to the Force in a way he hasn’t been able to in nearly 10 years. Though he isn’t able to save his friend nor bring himself to kill him, Obi-Wan comes to with Vader’s existence. This is what leads him to refer to his old friend as "Darth," as he first does in A New Hope.
2 Meeting The New Darth Vader
Battle of the Heroes
When Obi-Wan confronts Anakin on the lava-covered planet of Mustafar about his fall to the dark side, Anakin is so far gone that his master has no choice but to fight him. Obi-Wan was adamant that he did not want to kill Anakin, but when Anakin forces his hand, Obi-Wan doesn’t hold back. The choreography and cinematography of this fight sequence make this one of the most impressive scenes in all of Star Wars.
Obi-Wan has always been better than Anakin at accepting reality. When Obi-Wan jumps to the lava bank, he pleads for Anakin not to follow him, knowing that his former student would be disadvantaged. Anakin’s pride wins out, and Obi-Wan cuts him down in midair. Obi-Wan was right about not being able to kill Anakin, but leaving him alive had a disastrous ripple effect.
1 Duel Of The Fates
A Destiny-Altering Fight
Qui-Gon Jinn and his then-apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi lead the way during the Naboo Crisis that kickstarts the chain of events that leads to the Clone Wars. When Darth Maul shows up to the fight, the two Jedi take it upon themselves to chase after the Sith apprentice. The fight leads them to a remote area of the Naboo palace, where Maul reveals his lightsaber’s deadly second blade.
Force-fields keep the pacing of the fight from becoming overwhelming, but they also separate Obi-Wan from his master. When Qui-Gon is struck down, Obi-Wan is heartbroken and breaks through the force-fields to take over the fight. By its conclusion, Obi-Wan has fallen into a reactor pit with Maul standing over him. At the last second, Obi-Wan uses the Force to propel himself upwards, taking Maul by surprise and cutting him in half. Paired with one of the most iconic scores in Star Wars, the scene is easily one of the most gripping parts of the entire franchise.
