Luke Skywalker became the owner of a total of three different lightsabers over the course of Star Wars canon. Played by Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker was fascinated by the idea of a lightsaber from the very first moment he saw it. According to Alec Guinness' Obi-Wan Kenobi, the lightsaber is "an elegant weapon for a more civilized time." It now stands as the symbol of not just the Jedi, but Star Wars itself.
Luke acquired two lightsabers in the Star Wars movies, but the character has used a third one in the comics. There are many different lightsaber types, but Luke's have always been simple and basic ones, with the Jedi choosing to shun the more flashier designs others have used. Every one of Luke's lightsabers stands as symbolic of his character, representing his journey as a Jedi.
Luke Skywalker's Blue Lightsaber
Seen in A New Hope & The Empire Strikes Back; later wielded by Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy
Luke's blue lightsaber, also referred to as the Skywalker lightsaber, is one of the most iconic weapons in Star Wars. First appearing in Lucas' 1977 film, the blue-bladed lightsaber was originally owned by Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker. Following Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi dueled his former Padawan and took the weapon after the major defeat. Luke used the signature lightsaber during his training, but it was lost when Vader chopped off his hand in The Empire Strikes Back. The lightsaber later returned in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and it was ultimately buried on Tatooine.

Star Wars: The Real Reason Anakin & Luke's Lightsaber Is So Special
The sequel trilogy stressed just how special Anakin and Luke's old lightsaber was - and there's actually a good reason for that.
The Skywalker lightsaber perfectly represents the beginning of Luke's journey as a Jedi. He began as one who simply wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, because he had a rose-tinted view of Anakin Skywalker - one only possible because he knew nothing about Order 66, nothing about Darth Vader and the Sith. It's fitting that Luke lost this lightsaber in the fateful encounter where Darth Vader revealed he was in fact Luke's father, with Luke's illusions shattered.
Luke Skywalker's Yellow Lightsaber
Seen in Charles Soule's (2020) series
While not shown in any live-action Star Wars movies, Luke spent time using a yellow lightsaber after losing his original weapon on Cloud City. The canon comic book from Marvel, Star Wars #6, followed Luke, Leia Organa, and Lando Calrissian traveling back to the Cloud City. Though Luke failed to recover his weapon, he acquired a vision from a woman named Verla, guiding him to Outer Rim. He arrived at an old outpost from the High Republic Era where he acquired a weapon once wielded by Jedi Temple guards. It was ultimately destroyed by rogue droids.
This yellow lightsaber symbolizes the next stage of Luke's journey as a Jedi. Although shaken by the revelation of Darth Vader's true identity, Luke began a quest to learn as much as he could about the Jedi Order, discovering so many secrets and relics that the Empire had attempted to conceal. The High Republic lightsaber represents this, with Luke claiming the history and heritage of the Jedi for himself.
Luke Skywalker's Green Lightsaber
From Return of the Jedi onwards
When Luke lost his first lightsaber during a duel with Darth Vader, he constructed a new one with a green blade. The hilt was actually designed to look like Obi-Wan's third lightsaber in Star Wars canon. The weapon was first revealed in Return of the Jedi during the rescue of Han Solo on Tatooine, and Luke kept it to the end of his life on Ahch-To. When Luke became one with the Force, the lightsaber remained on the planet where it remained in the possession of the Caretakers.
The green lightsaber stands for the end of Luke's journey, because this was the blade he built for himself. No longer was Luke a Jedi simply because he wanted to be like his father; now, he claimed the truth that he was a Jedi, and instead believed his father could be redeemed and like him. No longer was he dependent on the secrets of the past; now, he was learning secrets of the Force for himself, even building his own blade. It's easy to see why this is the perfect tool for Star Wars' greatest hero.
