An iconic Star Wars villain who first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul has been played by five different actors. Darth Maul's history is a complex one, with the Sith apprentice becoming a force to be reckoned with during the Clone Wars, and even facing Obi-Wan Kenobi one final time on the deserts of Tatooine in Star Wars Rebels.
Darth Maul has become one of Star Wars' most celebrated villains, with an enduring influence on the franchise as a whole. This story has been told in several different mediums, meaning he's been played by no less than five different actors. Here's your guide to all the actors who have played Darth Maul.
5 Ray Park
Stuntman Ray Park was cast as the face of Darth Maul in his first appearance in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Park's incredible fighting style cemented Maul's place in Star Wars history, although the character's limited dialogue was re-dubbed. Park would return to the role of Maul to physically portray him in a cameo role during the third act of Solo: A Star Wars Story. In ive-action, Park is the only person to physically perform Maul. Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 saw Park play Maul through a motion capture performance, allowing animators to craft a stunning battle with Ahsoka Tano on Mandalore. Outside of Star Wars, Park has been the stunt double for the likes of Christopher Walken in films like Sleepy Hollow. Park’s first speaking role came in the 2000’s X-Men, where he played Mortimer Toynbee/Toad.
4 Peter Serafinowicz
Maul only had three lines in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Although Ray Park said the dialogue during production, the lines were re-dubbed by Peter Serafinowicz. The Phantom Menace was Serafinowicz’s first film role, though he had acted on television since 1996. The role of Maul now seems a bit out of character for Serafinowicz, who is best known as a comedian; he most recently portrayed the title character in The Tick from 2016-2019. Many will recognize Serafinowicz from his role as Pete in Shaun of the Dead, as well as guest roles on shows like Parks and Recreation and Miracle Workers.
3 Sam Witwer
Voice actor Sam Witwer has voiced Darth Maul six times across multiple mediums, including in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and he's become seen as the definitive voice of Maul. Witwer even worked with Ray Park to bring Darth Maul to live-action for his cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, re-dubbing the dialogue in post. The actor has been a mainstay in Star Wars for many years, originally providing his voice and likeness to the now non-canon video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed as Starkiller before voicing The Son in The Clone Wars. Witwer has made cameos in other Star Wars properties, most recently appearing as a shore trooper in Andor.
Outside of Star Wars, Witwer has also had great success. He’s had live-action roles on shows like Smallville, Supergirl, Battlestar Galactica, and Being Human. Even though Maul may have perished at the hands of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Rebels season 3 episode “Twin Suns,” there are a few time periods that remain unexplored for the character. Given Witwer’s love and knowledge of the Star Wars galaxy, it likely won’t be long until he graces the screen again within the franchise.
2 Ben Prendergast
Though Ben Prendergast’s time playing Darth Maul was short, he has left his mark on Star Wars. Prendergast voiced Maul in the 2020 LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special. In addition to his voice work as Maul, he’s also voiced General Hux in Star Wars Resistance. Prendergast’s resume isn’t quite as extensive as the other actors who have portrayed Maul, but he did voice Mathias Croft in The Sojourn, a science-fiction audio drama. In addition to his voice work, Prendergast has also been active in the theater community in Australia.
1 Lee Tockar
An accomplished voice actor, Lee Tockar took on the role of Darth Maul briefly in 2013 for the animated Lego Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles. He did three episodes, in which he voiced both Maul and Nute Gunray. Outside of Star Wars, Tockar is best known for playing Snips and eight other voices in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, as well as Eugene “Bling Bling Boy” Hamilton on Johnny Test. Star Wars has a history of bringing back actors whom they have worked with previously, so it’s entirely possible that any of Darth Maul’s five actors could return in the future.
