The best best Star Wars TV show: Andor.
By the time of Andor season 2's cast of characters, with soldiers like the titular Cassian, leaders like Luthen Rael, and understatedly important rebels like Kleya making themselves known as some of the most compelling figures in Star Wars. However, one Star Wars character from Andor stood tall above the rest, in my opinion, and solidified herself as the best of 2025, though I fear the future of the franchise will waste her potential.
Mon Mothma Is The Best Star Wars Character Of 2025
The Senator Was A Remarkable Screen Presence In Andor's Two Seasons
The character in question is Mon Mothma. Before Andor, Mon Mothma was simply an underdeveloped, albeit slightly iconic, leader of Star Wars' Rebel Alliance. Her appearances in Return of the Jedi, her somewhat notorious deleted scene from Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, her cameo in Rogue One, and her episode of Star Wars Rebels meant that Mon Mothma was known, but only on the level of other "B-tier" Star Wars heroes. After Andor, though, this has changed.
Thanks to the combined efforts of Tony Gilroy, his writing team, and Genevieve O'Reilly, Andor has solidified Mon Mothma as one of the single-best characters in the entire franchise. The depth of Mon's story in Andor was unexpected and, as a result, utterly compelling. In 2025, Andor season 2 only built on her amazing story from season 1, providing even more of a focus on the character's fraying patience with the Empire's cruel crimes. The outstanding installments of Andor season 2, episodes 7-9 brought this to a head in the best way, solidifying Mon Mothma as Star Wars' best character of 2025.
Mon Mothma Perfectly Fits Star Wars' New Republic Timeline
Mon Would Fit The Future Of Star Wars
Concerning how Star Wars could capitalize on the excellent depiction of Mon Mothma in 2025, the future of the franchise seems promising on paper. Star Wars movies are due to be set in the New Republic timeline of the franchise, be it The Mandalorian and Grogu or Dave Filoni's other movie set in that era. Then there are other Star Wars TV shows beyond Andor that are set in a similar timeframe, one that fits Mon's character extremely well.

Star Wars: New Republic Timeline Explained
The New Republic Era is a brief period of galactic history, but it's vitally important to Star Wars. Here are all the key galactic events!
In this era of the Star Wars timeline, Mon Mothma is the Chancellor of the New Republic. This was confirmed in Ahsoka season 1, in which Genevieve O'Reilly appeared as the character at a hearing for New Republic officials. After Ahsoka season 1's ending, which saw Grand iral Thrawn return to the Star Wars galaxy looking to reinstate the Empire, it would make sense for the New Republic to become more officially involved in the fight against him. Mon is no stranger to opposing Imperial regimes, meaning the future of the Star Wars franchise fits her perfectly.
Will Star Wars' Future Waste The Potential Mon Mothma Showed In 2025?
Mon's Strengths May Be Confined To Andor
Despite the perfect link between Mon Mothma and the New Republic timeline, it may be the reality that the character's true potential will not be realized going forward. For one, a big reason why Mon's character has improved so drastically was the excellent writing of Tony Gilroy and his team on Andor. That show is so inherently different from other Star Wars properties, allowing its writing to be much more mature, in-depth, and geared toward compelling character work than the more surface-level action/adventure-based writing of usual Star Wars TV.
While the likes of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni certainly have their strengths in Star Wars, neither of them can write the intricacies of Star Wars politics as well as Gilroy...
Mon has always been an intriguing character, but there is no denying that her franchise-best status after 2025 is solely because of her treatment in Andor by Gilroy and the show's other writers. In the future of the franchise, Mon will be handled by other filmmakers. While the likes of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni certainly have their strengths in Star Wars, neither of them can write the intricacies of Star Wars politics as well as Gilroy.
Therefore, this means that, although Mon could appear in Ahsoka season 2, for example, she likely will not be written with the same intense focus she was in Andor. Also, The Mandalorian and Grogu, despite taking place in the New Republic timeline, was filmed before Andor season 2's immense success, potentially meaning O'Reilly was deemed unnecessary to include, thus rendering Mon Mothma obsolete in the story. Due to these reasons, I worry that Star Wars will waste Mon Mothma's excellent potential post-2025.
There Is Still Time For Star Wars To Capitalize On Mon Mothma's Andor Success
The Franchise Has Even More Reason To Do So After Andor Season 2
All that being said, there is still a way for Star Wars to include Mon Mothma in the New Republic timeline after proving how great she is in Andor. Although The Mandalorian and Grogu or Ahsoka may not make the most of Mon's character, neither project is expected to end the New Republic saga. Star Wars TV shows will likely be announced to follow on from Ahsoka season 2, with Dave Filoni's Mandalorian-era film still confirmed to be in the works.

Dave Filoni Explains His Grand Star Wars Vision: “I Work In Very Big Arcs & Timelines”
ScreenRant interviews Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni about Ahsoka season 2, The Mandalorian & Grogu, and more at Star Wars Celebration.
After seeing how well Mon Mothma has been written and received in Andor, future New Republic stories could make more of an effort to include her. If The Mandalorian and Grogu missed out on this chance, Filoni's big-screen movie might not. While Filoni's writing for Mon in Ahsoka was not as strong as Gilroy's in Andor, he could make a more concerted effort to strike that tone in Ahsoka season 3 or other New Republic stories. Overall, Star Wars has not completely missed out on the chance to utilize its best character of 2025 going forward, and I just hope the franchise does not waste that potential.
