While the Super.
Guardians Of The Galaxy paid off in a big way, successfully expanding the scope of the MCU while introducing viewers to a loveable new team of superheroes. The movie's success quickly led to Avengers: Endgame and they played a pretty major role during the events of Infinity War in particular.
Work will begin on The Suicide Squad. One of the biggest unanswered questions from the first Guardians Of The Galaxy was the question of Star-Lord's father, with the movie dropping several vague hints. It quickly became clear this would be a central story in a sequel, with Gunn later confirming that Kurt Russell would be playing Peter's father Ego the Living Planet. Ego is a Celestial who is eventually revealed to be a villain and the Guardian's ultimately destroy him. This is a major change from the comics, where Star-Lord's father is an alien named J'Son of Spartax.
While J'Son backstory has been altered a few times throughout the run of the Guardians Of The Galaxy comic, the basic story beats portray him as heir to the Spartoi Empire. J'Son was educated on a number of different planets so he could learn from their cultures and he worked dozens of job, ranging from poet to fighter pilot. He once crashlanded on Earth and was nursed back to health by Star-Lord's mother Meredith Quill. They fell in love but when he was forced to return to his home planet, J'Son blanked her memories of him to spare her the pain; he didn't realize she was pregnant with their son Peter before he left.
Unfortunately, their reunion would be far from happy, with J'Son becoming a ruthless ruler in the intervening years. While he wants Star-Lord to him by getting rid of the other Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter discredits his father to the Spartoi Empire and has him removed. J'Son later becomes a villain known as Mister Knife who seeks revenge on Star-Lord, with the two often clashing. Despite his history in the comics, James Gunn decided against making Star-Lord's father J'Son in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, feeling Star Wars had already played out the royal family space opera angle.
J'Son is also something of a one-note villain in Guardians Of The Galaxy, though his Mister Knife persona gave him more of an edge. While Star-Lord's father is Ego in the MCU, J'Son has yet to appear, though there's alwats a chance that will change in the future.
