Netflix has revealed that the game Squid Game: Unleashed will be free for everyone - even those without a Netflix subscription - for a limited time only. Announced during The Game Awards 2024, fans were given another look at the previously-confirmed title, ahead of the soon-to-be-released season two of the hit show, Squid Game.

Squid Game: Unleashed took the stage at TGA, introduced none other than the show's Pink Guards - and an all-new black-suited guard. Revealed alongside a teaser for the Season 2, Unleashed is breaking Netflix Games tradition by being free to play for all, for a limited time. While it's unclear just how long the game will be free for, players can get involved even without being subscribed to the streaming service. Squid Game: Unleashed releases on mobile on December 17.

Everything We Know About Squid Game: Unleashed

A Free-For-All Party Game (Literally)

Squid Game: Unleashed is a party royale game that promises the same high-octane action and chaos of the show (without the risk to life, of course). Players can take part in a series of games seen in the show, including Glass Bridge, and Red Light Green Light. While this isn't the first time Squid Game's iconic games have been recreated in a video game, it's the first officially licensed video game release tied to the show.

Squid Game Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Squid Game season 2 is on its way, and this is everything that's been announced so far.

Described as the "definitive Squid Game video game," Netflix promises "fast, heart-pounding action and brutal competition in this multiplayer battle royale game." Players will be able to battle online across a series of deadly challenges inspired by children's playground games, without any ads or in-app purchases. After the free-play period ends, players will need an active Netflix subscription to access the game - and all other titles in the Netflix Games catalog.

Our Take - Squid Game: Unleashed Couldn't Be Better Poised For Success

A Guaranteed Win

For a party royale game that's launching almost simultaneously with Squid Game season 2, it's hard to imagine Squid Game: Unleashed won't be a success. With the game launching just days before Season 2 releases on December 26, fans revisiting the first Season and getting excited for 2 will have a great opportunity to test their own skills in the games. Not even requiring a Netflix subscription - at least initially - opens the potential player count even further, as does the platform itself; players only need a mobile in order to jump in.

Hopefully this marks a new trend for Netflix: the service already has tie-in games like The Queen's Gambit chess game, as well as a Love is Blind game, and Stranger Things titles. Perhaps we'll see more tie-in releases that correlate to new season launches on the platform, driving our excitement as fans even higher. Here's hoping!
