Summary

  • Sony's Noir series will introduce Spider-Man Noir into live-action for the first time ever, with Nicolas Cage reprising the role.
  • Spider-Man Noir being adapted to live-action first may be an insult to the more well known Miles Morales' Spider-Man.
  • Miles Morales' Spider-Man could still come into live-action, whether that be in Sony's Spider-Man Universe or in the MCU.

Sony's Sony Spider-Man Universe series focused on Spider-Man Noir was announced for Sony and Amazon Prime Video in February 2023, and though the fate of the project was uncertain during 2023's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production has since restarted on Noir. The series will bring Spider-Man Noir, who previously appeared in 2018's animated smash-hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, into live-action for the first time ever.

After a period of uncertainty, recent cancelation of Silk: Spider Society, these updates regarding Noir are very exciting, but it appears another Spider-Man has unfortunately been snubbed.

Deadline's report in May 2024 also confirmed that acclaimed actor Nicolas Cage would be portraying Spider-Man Noir in Noir. Cage previously voiced the black-and-white hero in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and will presumably return for the animated threequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Academy Award-winner Cage is a huge draw for Noir, and will mark the introduction of another version of Peter Parker in live-action, following in the footsteps of four previous actors who've portrayed Peter Parker's Spider-Man in live-action, though Cage's Spider-Man Noir will be wildly different.

Nicolas Cage has portrayed several superhero characters over the years. Back in 2007, Nicolas Cage starred as Johnny Blaze's Ghost Rider in the eponymous Marvel movie, Ghost Rider, a role which he reprised for the 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. 2010's Kick-Ass saw Cage portray Damon Macready's Big Daddy, a parody of Batman. More recently, Cage made a cameo appearance as Superman in 2023's The Flash, as he almost portrayed the Man of Steel in the 1990s. Despite his varied superhero history, Spider-Man Noir could be Nicolas Cage's greatest superhero role yet.

Why Miles Morales Deserves A Live-Action Project

Miles Morales Is Voiced By Shameik Moore In Sony's Animated Spider-Verse Franchise

While the prospect of Nicolas Cage portraying a darker and hardened version of Spider-Man Noir in live-action is very exciting, the fact that Noir will be delivered before a live-action Miles Morales-focused project is something of an insult. Sony's animated Spider-Verse films have been, by far, the studio's most successful Spider-Man adventures, and this franchise is led by Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore. Miles Morales became Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse following the death of his world's Peter Parker, and embarked on a journey through the multiverse in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Since Miles Morales is the leading star of Sony's Spider-Verse franchise, and Peter Parker's own successor, it could have been assumed that he would be the first hero to make the move from animation into live-action. A Miles Morales project could bring the vibrant adventures of the Spider-Verse movies into live-action, and forge a new, iconic iteration of Spider-Man, with a young Black actor taking the reins. Unfortunately, Miles Morales will have to wait longer for a live-action adaptation, but that doesn't mean the young, Brooklyn-based wall-crawler won't ever get the live-action treatment of Peter Parker and Spider-Man Noir.

Will Sony Make A Live-Action Miles Morales Movie After Spider-Verse?

A Live-Action Miles Morales Movie Has Already Been Teased

While a live-action Miles Morales project hasn't actually been confirmed by either Sony Pictures or Marvel Studios, this possible movie has been teased by executives at Sony. Producer Amy Pascal, when asked about the prospect of a live-action Miles Morales movie by Variety in May 2023, stated, "You'll see all of it... It's all happening." As well as teasing the development of a project focused on the Spider-Women, this also all but confirmed that a live-action Miles Morales movie would be developed, but not much has been heard since then.

Variety once again spoke to Amy Pascal and the creators of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at February 2024's Oscars Luncheon, where they were questioned how far along in production a live-action Miles Morales movie might have been. Indeed, not very far at all, as Pascal only suggested that a Miles Morales movie would be produced "someday," perhaps "not till [they] make two more movies." Christopher Miller, one half of filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who penned Sony's Spider-Verse projects, clarified these comments, suggesting the two movies would be Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and another Tom Holland-led Spider-Man movie.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was originally scheduled for release on March 29, 2024, but was removed from Sony's release schedule in July 2023, and no new release date has yet been confirmed. Production is underway on Miles Morales' third animated feature, and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man 4, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker's Spider-Man, is also in development for the MCU. This means that a live-action Miles Morales-centric movie could be on the horizon, but there are other opportunities for the young wall-crawler to make his way to live-action before getting his own project.

Miles Morales Could The MCU As Tom Holland's Spider-Man Replacement

Tom Holland Is Heading Into His Second MCU Trilogy As Spider-Man

Tom Holland's Peter Parker in his Spider-Man suit in the MCU

Tom Holland has already appeared as Spider-Man in more live-action projects than any previous actor, but his total of six feature films is set to increase in the MCU's future. Holland has been confirmed to be returning as Peter Parker's Spider-Man in at least Marvel Studios' Spider-Man 4, though is expected to hang around for another full Spider-Man trilogy. However, the actor likely won't play Spider-Man forever, so it's possible his trilogy could see him pick out the perfect successor to take over after his departure, and this creates the opportunity to bring Miles Morales into the MCU.

Donald Glover's appearance as Aaron Davis, Miles Morales' uncle, in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming teased the existence of Miles Morales in the MCU, but he hasn't yet appeared in person. Seeing Tom Holland train up a new version of Spider-Man would be an excellent storyline for his trilogy, and this could even create a mini-Spider-Verse story in the MCU's Phase 6, if Avengers: Secret Wars features cameo appearances from the likes of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Nicolas Cage's versions of Peter Parker. While Noir might debut the next live-action Spider-Man, Miles Morales surely isn't too far behind.
