Famous from Marvel's Spider-Society heroes are battling the evil Sinister Squadron, ending up captured and with power-dampening collars fitted that prevent them busting loose.

In Spider-Society #3 by Alex Segura, Ruairí Coleman, Matt Milla, and Joe Caramagna, with all hope lost, Jess Drew reflects that Madame Web said her universe was hard to sense, like there was some sort of interference. Ghost-Spider realizes that if, by Jess' nature, she disrupts the powers of Madame Web, she might also cancel out the Squadron's weapons, since they're constructed to target the multiverse's spider-heroes.

Arana suggests firing off a venom blast while tugging on the collar. The collar doesn't disrupt Jess' powers and is destroyed, allowing Jess to free the rest of the Spider-Society. It seems that Jess Drew's powers are different enough to other spider-heroes that she's immune to powers and tech built to target them.

Jess Drew comes from Earth-332. Not much is known about this universe as it only appears in Across the Spider-Verse and the comic Edge of Spider-Verse #4. Ever since Spider-Society #1, Jess has been described by Madame Web as a wild card, and as a "secret weapon" that the Sinister Squadron won't see coming by Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel O'Hara, but the reason why was kept secret.

Even Spider-Woman herself didn't know why she was a secret weapon, and was only able to figure it out because Madame Web said it was hard to detect her universe. It could be that because Jess' universe was originally an animated universe, she may resonate on a different multiversal frequency than comic-based universes. The universes in the Across the Spider-Verse movie are adjacent universes to the ones in the comics. For example, Ghost-Spider's home universe is designated Earth-65 in the comics, while her movie counterpart's universe is designated Earth-65B. The fact that they have the same number designation, but are essentially different Earths, could hint at two different multiversal levels.

It's also possible that Jess' origin or past adventures make her different. The multiverse's spider-heroes are all 'Spider Totems' chosen in a mystic process, however their origins can differ greatly - for example, Peter Parker is less connected to magic because he was empowered via scientific means. Something in Jess' past could make her a similar edge case, and thus less bound by the rules and limitations of other Spider Totems.

The Sinister Squadron Don't Know Who They're Dealing With

Whatever the reason, Jess Drew's immunity may have just decided the fate of the multiverse, as she allows her fellow heroes to re the battle. It's likely Spider-Society will continue to explore Spider-Woman's unique immunity and its origin, however it's already proved to be a major advantage. In a situation like the Spider-Verse where villains are used to fighting heroes with the same basic powers, any difference can provide an edge, and as it's revealed that the Sinister Squadron have based their tech on rules that don't apply to Jess Drew's Spider-Woman, she's perfectly placed to lead the fightback against them.

Spider-Society #3 is available from Marvel Comics.
