One of the most beloved games of its generation, acquired by companies like Disney or Amazon. This news could shake up the industry, especially considering the number of studios that EA itself has purchased. Because of this possible buyout, a release date for The Simpsons: Hit and Run 2 could be on the horizon.

The Simpsons: Hit and Run is regarded as one of the best Grand Theft Auto-like open world games, and generally one of the best games of the PlayStation 2/GameCube/Xbox era. It's loved by fans for its engaging gameplay, but also for its references to the show, and other humor that can be appreciated whether they already have a love for the residents of Springfield or not. The game is still a cult classic to this day and The Simpsons: Hit and Run was even voted the most wanted game remaster.

If EA gets bought out, The Simpsons: Hit and Run 2 could happen, with or without EA. Although EA currently has the rights to the Hit and Run IP, the company has let it lie dormant since the game's original release in 2003. But depending on if EA gets acquired - and what company acquires it - a Simpsons: Hit and Run 2 release date could be getting closer.

One company to acquire EA that makes a lot of sense is Disney. A major contributing factor is that Disney wants developers to innovate classic properties, something EA developer Respawn has already done by working on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. In addition, Disney now owns The Simpsons, so it would make sense for the company to want to get its hands on the Hit and Run IP and either let EA take another shot at it, or outsource The Smpsons: Hit and Run 2 to other developers like it's done with other projects. With Disney's investment in other AAA games like Marvel's Spider-Man and the  Indiana Jones game and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, it wouldn't be surprising if it brought back Simpsons: Hit and Run.

A few other acquiring companies, like Amazon and Apple, would likely just make a Hit and Run 2 less possible. If Amazon acquires EA, the company will likely be even more focused on live service games like Amazon's MMO, New World. On the other hand, an Apple acquisition would likely steer EA closer to mobile development, a direction that would likely put The Simpsons: Hit and Run 2 out of the question.

With an acquisition of EA becoming more likely, a release date for The Simpsons: Hit and Run 2 could become more likely as well. Disney, the now-owners of The Simpsons IP, would almost surely be thrilled with a sequel to the cult classic. On the other hand, EA acquisition contenders like Amazon and Apple could put an end to sequel speculation altogether. Either way, though, it seems fans of The Simposons: Hit and Run could get their sequel hopes raised or dashed in the coming months.
