- Emily Blunt reveals that she hasn't heard anything concrete about Sicario 3, casting doubt on the movie happening.
- Sicario: Day of the Soldado's mixed reviews and diminishing returns at the box office may have hindered the momentum for a third film.
- Producers remain optimistic about the third film's chances, revealing last year that a strong story idea is in place.
Sicario star Emily Blunt shares her honest thoughts regarding Sicario 3's chances. Released in 2015, the first film sees Blunt playing FBI agent Kate Macer as she s a government task force operating in the gray areas of the law to fight Mexican drug cartel activity. The success of Denis Villeneuve's first film resulted in a sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, getting made with director Stefano Sollima at the helm, but the sequel didn't fare as well critically or commercially, and a third film, which could be titled Sicario: Capos, has floundered in development hell ever since.
After a series of mixed Sicario 3 updates over the past year, Blunt shares a disappointing update regarding the film during a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
According to the actor, nothing concrete has come across her desk in of another installment in the franchise, leading her to believe that it's not actually happening. Check out Blunt's comment below:
"I hear rumblings, but there's nothing firm. Because I haven't seen anything, I think it's hearsay.”

Sicario: Day of the Soldado's Ending & Sequel Setup Explained
Sicario 2 is somehow even darker than the first, with deeper grey morality and one kicker of an ending. We explain what happened - and what's next.
Will Sicario 3 Actually Happen?
2015's Sicario was a big hit with critics, with Villeneuve's assured directing and strong performances from Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benecio Del Toro elevating the film above the average thriller. Blunt didn't return for the sequel, with the story instead moving to focus on Del Toro's Alejandro and Brolin's Matt Graves. Although still boasting some strong elements, the sequel failed to resonate in the same way, and it's possible that it killed some momentum for a third installment. Check out some of the differences critically and commercially between the first two movies in the chart below:

Although the Sicario: Day of the Soldado reception wasn't quite as positive as perhaps had been hoped, there's clearly still optimism regarding a third film coming to fruition. Producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee affirmed last year that a script is in the works with a strong story idea in place. In an interview with Collider in October, producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill revealed that their plan is for Sicario 3 to reunite Blunt, Del Toro, and Brolin.
Sicario is currently streaming on Prime Video, while the sequel can be streamed on Hulu.
Since multiple producers involved are seemingly confident about the franchise's future, it's surprising that Blunt has heard very little about the project, especially considering the planned return of her character. Work on the sequel is likely continuing to happen behind the scenes if the producers' comments are anything to go by, but it's possible that story and script troubles have prevented the idea from moving forward in any significant way. For now, Sicario 3 is still very much up in the air.
