Here's why Matthew Lillard's Stu. That meant when a sequel was greenlit, new killers needed to be drafted in to don the iconic Ghostface mask.
Scream 2022 was no different, and while the sequel offered up plenty of red herring suspects, the finale unveiled Amber (Mikey Madison) and Richie (Jack Quaid) as the new killers. In keeping with the meta-narrative of the saga, it turns out the duo were mega-fans of the fictional Stab movies, which are based on the "real" events of the Scream films. After being unhappy with the Rian Johnson Stab reboot, they hatched a plan to make a real-life sequel that would "redeem" the series and reclaim it for the "true fans."
Naturally, their plan fails, with both Amber and Richie being brutally killed in Scream 2022 by the survivors. Part of the fun of rewatching the Scream 3, which only had one Ghostface - often left plenty of clues so viewers could piece this together, but for Scream 2022, it appears that Amber may have committed nearly all the killings herself. If this is correct, Richie might just be the least effective Ghostface in any Scream movie.
Richie Has No Confirmed Ghostface Kills In Scream 2022
In a conversation with Collider about which character was acting as Ghostface throughout the story, Scream 2022 directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin revealed it could be either Amber or Richie during the opening attack on Jenna Ortega's Tara. Even if it was Richie, Tara survived this assault, and according to the aforementioned interview, it was mostly Amber for the rest of the movie, since this would make "... Richie just one of the most pathetic characters at the end of the day, that he doesn’t really want to get his hands dirty and do the gross stuff."
While some viewers believe Richie might have killed Scream 2022 victim Wes Hicks, the movie doesn't confirm this. This means that's a real possibility it was Amber who killed everybody, which would be in keeping with the directors' comments about Richie being reluctant to get too involved. Once unveiled as the mastermind - with Quaid having a great time hamming it up - Richie has no problem trying to murder the remaining survivors assembled at Stu's old house. Of course, he fails in this too, so not only does he not complete his ultimate goal, it's possible he may not have even scored a kill.
