Developer and publisher Square Enix has announced a remastered version of SaGa Frontier that will arrive in summer 2021, introducing improved graphics and a wealth of cut content that will include new events, cutscenes and a brand-new protagonist, a detective by the name Fuse.
Squaresoft originally released the JRPG classic SaGa Frontier in 1998 in North America for the PlayStation 1. Similar to its predecessor, the remastered version will focus on multiple characters, with Fuse's addition making him the eighth protagonist that players can choose to control. In the original, Fuse was a party member that could be recruited to assist on missions. Now, the detective has been given a proper background as a protagonist that players can explore further. The other seven protagonists include Emelia, Red, Blue, Asellus, Lute, Riki and T260G. Each character has their own unique storyline, fraught with different ambitions and possible outcomes. Each hero possesses different abilities that can be upgraded as the character arc moves forward.
running as smoothly as possible.
The degree to which the Free-Form Scenario System will influence player choice is not entirely confirmed yet but it does appear that the game is taking an early step toward prioritizing the same non-linear trajectory that fans appreciated in the original. At the time of its release, SaGa Frontier was lauded for its open-world game mechanics. It is the seventh release in the SaGa series and represents the latest past-generation games to make a return in 2020.
Square Enix recently confirmed that its staff will work from home permanently starting in December, making it likely that development on the remastered version will continue from the comforts of homes as developers continue to adapt to these most unusual circumstances imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. The Final Fantasy developer is one of several other companies in the entertainment and tech industries to feel the ramifications of the ongoing second wave of infections during the Winter season. Players can hope that this does not result in the SaGa Frontier Remastered being delayed beyond this summer, but it would be a for the good cause of Square employee safety.
