In July 2022 it was announced that a new game inspired by the RoboCop franchise, RoboCop: Rogue City, will be releasing in June 2023, and it gets extra credibility by featuring the original RoboCop's actor. True to the series' action-heavy tone, the game will be a first-person shooter, though RoboCop: Rogue City will reportedly also be sprinkled with a hefty dose of exploration opportunities and even multiple-choice dialogue, allowing players to fully step into the shoes of the titular character. On hand to lend more life to the protagonist is a familiar actor that long-time fans of the RoboCop series will recognize.
The first gameplay reveal of RoboCop: Rogue City was released on July 7, although the project was initially announced in 2021. Though short, it does provide a good look at the game's setting and premise. Based in Detroit, the Rogue City version of which is marked by dark, dilapidated environments full of graffiti and neon lights, players have a variety of weapons at their disposal to shoot their way through corruption and chaos in a gory spectacle. The power of choosing how to handle each scenario is put in the hands of the player, but the trailer hints at an overarching story that will likely help drive things.
Of course, RoboCop: Rogue City is not the only video game inspired by the RoboCop franchise. The first was an arcade game that released in 1988, just a year after the original movie. From there the series has spanned various gameplay styles, from side-scrollers to other first-person shooters. The most recent came out almost a decade ago in 2014 as a free-to-play shooter for mobile devices. Comparatively, RoboCop: Rogue City seems far more expansive and ambitious. The game's developer even went so far as to bring back at least one original actor from the series to lend his voice talents to Rogue City.
Who Voices RoboCop In The New Game Rogue City
Returning to play the role of RoboCop is Peter Weller, who originated the role in 1987 and also starred in the sequel. Thus far, no other voice actors have been revealed, though more will undoubtedly be announced as the video game's 2023 release date approaches. Although Weller hasn't voiced RoboCop in many of the other games inspired by the series, he recently returned to the role in 2019's Aftermath DLC for Mortal Kombat 11. He's also been featured in other roles throughout various other game series, like Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. His return in RoboCop: Rogue City seems to indicate that he'll be re-voicing iconic lines from the original films. It might also mean that the game's dialogue choices will be fully voiced.
As of right now, though, it's not fully clear how much of a central role RoboCop: Rogue City's role-playing opportunities will take. The game's immersive open-world to explore. Either way, the copious amounts of action featured in the trailer make it clear that there will be no shortage of FPS combat. At the very least, the return of Peter Weller is setting Rogue City up as an enjoyable trip for all fans of the RoboCop franchise, regardless of their preference in video game genres.
