While The Purge series has yet to be green-lit for a third season, The Purge 5 is due for a 2020 release, and a couple small nods to a larger scale Purge Night from the series might hint at the franchise's final direction: global expansion.

James DeMonaco, who created The Purge, has said that he thinks the fifth film will be the last. This, coupled with the ambiguous fate of the television series on USA, could mean the franchise in general is heading toward its grand finale. Therefore, it's likely going to be big and will have to tie up multiple loose ends that have been scattered throughout the series over the course of four films and two seasons of the television show. Though there haven't been key plot details released regarding The Purge 5 yet, many speculate that it will follow the events of The Purge: Election Year where Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) was working to take down the NFFA and end Purge Night for good.

At the end of Election Year, Roan was elected President of the United States, running on an Anti-Purge platform, but news of her winning was met with violent protests from NFFA ers. However, a continuing theme in the television series might hold another clue as to where the last leg of the franchise will lead, especially since Jason Blum has stated that a crossover between the series and films hadn't been ruled out. While Roan may be primed to end Purge Night in America, it's very possible that other countries have adopted Purge Night for themselves.

The Purge 5 #3

There has already been one crossover between The Purge tv series and the films when Ethan Hawke reprised his character of James Sandin in season two's finale. However, this could just be the start. At the end of season one, Jenna Betancourt (Hannah Emily Anderson) fled the country with her newborn baby before America's next Purge Night. The previous year, The Purge claimed the lives of her lover, Lila (Lili Simmons), and her husband, Rick (Colin Woodell). It's unclear whether Jenna is in temporarily or if her stay is more long-term. While in , she catches a broadcast reporting on Purge Night in America which states: "In a briefing earlier today, the President was asked to comment on whether would ever consider adopting a similar program. She avoided giving a direct answer, but did mention that the EU will debate the issue later this year."

Season 2 of The Purge built up a anti-Purge faction of its own, with survivors of the various storylines throughout the season all coming together in the finale to avenge the death of Esme Carmona (Paola Núñez), who was an NFFA employee who risked her life to expose the off-Purge killings carried out by the NFFA. Carmona was murdered at the very end of Purge Night, after the sirens had blared the event's completion. Since much of the timeline is vague and there hasn't been evidence to connect the first and second season, it's unclear as to when this happens chronologically, but could potentially be before the events of Election Year, or pave the way for the resistance faction to team up with Roan in The Purge 5. The resistance could also play into global liberation, if other countries have adopted these practices before the events of season two.

In season 2, other characters put down roots in Panama following Purge Night, which could imply that Panama is still neutral territory. If the EU ed The Purge after season one and before season two, it would give a stronger cause to the resistance and perhaps even bolster Charlie Roan's anti-Purge platform in future installments of The Purge franchise.
