Gamers on Sony console package. In-game tasks are ranked from bronze to gold in of difficulty, and nabbing all the trophies for a given game gives players a platinum-level reward. For third party games, the lists between both the Xbox and PlayStation systems are similar, although there can be differences in DLC implementation on occasion.

Both platforms are bringing these systems into their third generation, with Sony shaking things up more than expected for the PS5. Players on PlayStation have a level that's calculated from how many trophies they have saved to their profile. The level for the past two generations has ranged from 1-100, but that's been boosted to 999 levels for next-gen. This is likely to increase engagement, as the level will go up more often as players continue to grab trophies on PS5. The numbers are such that a player with a level of 12 will find a new level in the 200s when they first after the shift.

This isn't the first time that system-level cosmetic rewards were tied to an achievement system. On the Xbox 360, there was a time when games had tasks beyond the standard achievement list called Avatar Awards. As the name implied, these awards were cosmetic clothing and hair options for Xbox Avatars, the oft-forgotten Mii-alike that Xbox still showcases from time to time. Players could grab everything from Doomguy (not the Doom Slayer) armor to several Spartan Helmet variants just by playing their games. One could assume that PlayStation's five trophy awards will have a similar function, just trading in digital avatar clothes for digital wallpaper and profile pictures.

Considering that the popularity of achievements and other such systems have fallen out of favor in the mainstream, it's commendable for Sony to try to innovate to get people interested again on PS5. Any system that rewards players with system-level reminders of the adventures they've been on in their games is a worthwhile endeavor. Xbox has always talked a big game about the potential of achievements and gamerscore as some kind of system that eventually rewards players, but that never truly came to fruition. With all the games that cosmetic items and in-game perks, perhaps Sony can achieve that dream and give players a reason to fully explore their games once again.
