See AllFans Might Hate It, But Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Can't Abandon The Franchise's Controversial Subplot
The best (and worst) Godzilla movies focus the narrative around the human characters. The good ones help ground the story in something relevant to the audience, and the worst ones try to use it as a means of humanizing the main character rather than letting Godzillla be a force of nature the humans have to solve. Of course, this isn't always the case.
But I'm getting besides my point. The point is that Sonic and Co. have no problem humanizing themselves. Rather, the human characters become a vessel to help place them on Earth normally. Think of how popular Sonic X was, and it had human baggage too. But that human baggage was praised and nuanced--if not a little convenient for the plot half the time. The humans... Hate them or love them, they are an essential component for the success of this timeline. They help ground the stakes of the planet, and give Sonic a reason to stay here. I personally prefer the Earth stories to that of the Mobius ones. That's probably because I'm more invested in Earth than a silly little group of islands that don't really matter to me. Earth has some fun set pieces. So it makes sense to have Sonic want to protect it if he has human connections.
