Kate was not the main protagonist of the first movie, she was a side character, if you remove her from the movie entirely the movie would still play out the same. The main anti hero of the story is Alejandro and Matt, the three story lines are Kate, Silvio, and Alejandro, but neither Kate nor Silvio have any influence on the narrative whats so ever.
