You're right about the DeLorean seating, that's on me. But I think the rest is still possible. He could have taken the original DeLorean to a far enough future where making a flux capacitor is easy, made a second one, returned to 1885, kept the DeLorean back in the mine, and used the other flux capacitor to turn the train into a time machine.
