I mean Zeon and Char are transparently both those things, and if the alt history in the prologue is the author's first real experience with the setting's ethics it's a pretty understandable conclusion. The nuance of Gundam isn't the lack of a clear baddy, it's the complete and total lack of anyone resembling a good guy doing good, how being on the "right side of history" does not exempt people from being absolute monsters in their own right. Even the close-as-we-get-to-innocent Whitebase crew mostly become terrorists in the sequels.
