I don't think it's a sense of ownership, but simply a resistance to change and novelty from adults who can't enjoy adventure and have to complain all the time. Which I observe in practically all fandoms where something new and different has emerged.

I'm glad I kept my childish ability to just enjoy something into adulthood, even though the original trilogy and prequels aren't flawless, but I love them.
