best Power Rangers characters tend to be the ones who only ed the team later on.
The additional Ranger trope comes from the shows Power Rangers adapts. Even Lightspeed Rescue’s Ryan Mitchell, an original character created for Power Rangers, was designed to feel like a classic Sentai extra Ranger. These Rangers tend to be incredibly powerful, which is why they make such a strong impact and are usually fan-favorite characters.
10 Dino Thunder Black Ranger
Tommy Oliver
Whether the Dino Thunder Black Ranger can be considered an extra Ranger is a difficult question, as Dr. Oliver becomes a Power Ranger five episodes into the show. Regardless of semantics, Tommy was not always around on the field fighting alongside the main trio, making him somewhat of an extra Ranger. Still, when compared to proper sixth Rangers, Tommy’s story in Dino Thunder makes him more of a mentor than an actual extra hero. As incredible as this version of the character was, when it comes to the “sixth Ranger checklist,” a lot is missing from Dino Thunder Tommy.
9 Ninja Storm Samurai Green Ranger
Cameron "Cam" Watanabe
Most of Power Rangers’ sixth or extra Rangers were characters that were only introduced when they were about to the action. This is not the case for Ninja Storm’s Cam, which makes him one of the most interesting additional Rangers in the franchise. Cam was part of the show from the start and helped the Wind Rangers every step of the way. As the son of the sensei, Cam knew more about the Ranger morphers and the school than anyone else on the team, meaning he was more than ready to become a Power Ranger himself.
8 Mighty Morphin White Ranger
Tommy Oliver
The Mighty Morphin White Ranger is a curious case when it comes to defining what it means to be a sixth Ranger. On one hand, he is an actual sixth member of a team originally made up of five characters. On the other hand, Tommy was promoted to team leader less than five minutes after he became the White Ranger. Therefore, even though the White Ranger stands out from the team in of costume and even screen time, he never felt like an additional part of the squad but rather an essential part of it.
7 Zeo Gold Ranger
Trey of Triforia/Jason Lee Scott
The first of many Gold Rangers in the franchise, the Zeo Gold Ranger had one of the coolest Power Rangers costumes. The combination of black and gold, plus the unique shield and staff, made Zeo Gold a fan favorite right away. The fact that Trey of Triforia would down his powers to none other than Jason Lee Scott, the original Red Ranger from Mighty Morphin, made this Ranger color even more iconic. Some of the Power Rangers Zeo episodes involved the Gold Ranger, who can be considered a quintessential sixth Ranger.

Power Rangers In Order: How To Watch Every Series Chronologically & By Release Date
From Mighty Morphin to Cosmic Fury, here is how to watch every Power Rangers TV show in order, both chronologically and by release date.
6 Wild Force Lunar Wolf Ranger
Merrick Baliton
Evil Rangers turning good and ing the team was nothing new for Power Rangers by the time Wild Force premiered. However, Merrick Baliton was much more than just an evil Power Ranger. In fact, he was not a Ranger at all during his time as a villain – Merrick was an actual monster, Zen-Aku. Merrick was a fantastic character both as a villain and as a hero, and his time as a Power Ranger was defined by his wish to make things right after working for the forces of evil for so long.
5 In Space Silver Ranger
Zhane
Zhane’s introduction in Power Rangers in Space brought a lot of worldbuilding to the show, adding another layer to Andros’ character and expanding the franchise’s lore. It was also a relatively dark storyline for Power Rangers, as Zhane was left in a coma for years after he was severely injured in battle. After he woke up, however, Zhane had a very positive attitude toward life – a perfect contrast to Andros’ serious mood. There aren’t many Silver Rangers in Power Rangers, and Zhane’s costume from In Space remains one of the saga’s best.
4 Time Force Quantum Ranger
Eric Myers
Whereas a lot of sixth Rangers who served as antagonists were characters that were being brainwashed or manipulated by the villains, Time Force’s Eric Myers genuinely thought he was doing the right thing. The Quantum Ranger did not always agree with his former best friend, Wes, and believed that teams like the Time Force should act differently. The way Time Force explored Eric and Wes’ different approaches to being a Ranger, and how they eventually became brothers again, made for one of the best story arcs in the entire franchise.
3 Lightspeed Rescue Titanium Ranger
Ryan Mitchell
Lightspeed Rescue’s Titanium Ranger lived up to its sixth Ranger designation, as he was rarely part of the action alongside the core heroes. However, Ryan's appearance so little on the show is what made him such a great character. There was a sense of urgency or importance every time the Titanium Ranger was on screen as if the show was telling viewers that those episodes would be actually important for the main plot. The Titanium Ranger’s incredible dark backstory also worked well – Ryan grew up believing his father chose to save his sister during a car accident over him.
2 Dino Thunder White Ranger
Trent Fernandez-Mercer
Although Trent was the fifth and final member of the Dino Thunder team, his story perfectly followed the “sixth Ranger playbook.” An outsider who grows close to the Rangers but is turned into a bad guy by the villains and becomes a ridiculously powerful antagonist could be used to describe the original Green Ranger, yet this is also what happened to Trent. The Dino Thunder White Ranger looked and felt menacing every time he showed up, and it can be argued that he is one of the top five strongest Rangers in the franchise.
1 Mighty Morphin Green Ranger
Tommy Oliver
Power Rangers has seen great sixth, extra, or additional Rangers over the years, but the most iconic of them all will always be Mighty Morphin’s Green Ranger. Before he was Mighty Morphin White or Zeo Red, Tommy was the evil Green Ranger who was brainwashed by Rita Repulsa. “Green With Evil” would forever change the franchise, with the Green Ranger arguably becoming the show’s biggest character and a pop culture sensation. From the Dragon flute to the Dragonzord, everything about Tommy’s first Power Rangers color was an instant classic that defined what it means to be a sixth Ranger.
