The release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is poised to once again expand the series' National Pokédex by adding in a significant amount of new Pokémon. Each generation brings in dozens of additions, with some adding nearly 100 Pokémon to the series' total. Although Game Freak has yet to reveal all of what players can expect from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, given it doesn't release until November 18, there are a couple of different ways to make an educated guess. At the very least, the already-confirmed Pokémon should be taken into .

There are only between 20 and 30 new Pokémon officially confirmed to be coming to Scarlet and Violet thus far, with the number varying based on presumed evolutions for the starter Pokémon. This still brings the total up quite a bit from how many Pokémon there were total in 2021. Going off of leaks, however, it appears that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet could add around 109 Pokémon to the National Pokédex, though not all of them will be available in both versions of the game. This would bring the series total up to 1,014 Pokémon, allowing it to finally cross the threshold of over a thousand. Of course, this is much harder to , and the real number won't be known for certain until the 18th.

How Many New Pokémon Are In Scarlet & Violet

Greavard and Gimmighoul from Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

New Pokémon confirmed for Scarlet and Violet include its three starters, Quaxly, Sprigatito, and Fuecoco, and the ghost dog Pokémon Greavard. With leaks becoming increasingly frequent in the week leading up to the release, fans may have found a tentative answer for which favorite Pokémon are returning to Gen 9, and the same sources have revealed a supposedly complete list of never-before-seen Pokémon exclusive to Scarlet and Violet's Pokédex as well. While many Gen 9 leaks have already been debunked, it does seem reasonable to assume that the game would add a larger number of new Pokémon rather than just twenty or so.

Nearly every other Pokémon generation brings a similar amount to the National Pokédex. For example, Gen 1 features 151 Pokémon, Gen 2 includes 100, and even more recent expansions like Gen 8 add 95. It's worth noting that, generally speaking, only mainline Pokémon games expand the Pokédex. That said, a recent exception can be found in the few Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, though, technically speaking, Pokémon Legends is part of the core series even if it follows a new formula. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which is a more traditional release, will quite likely add far more.

Undoubtedly, more from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will be revealed as the game's official launch draws closer. That, or Pokémon fans will be able to better some of the leaks coming out regarding the game. Until then, anyone eager to get an official count for the new National Pokédex will unfortunately just have to wait it out. For the time being, however, it seems safe to estimate that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will bring the series total up to around 1,014.
