Nintendo's favorite franchise is getting a fresh spin with the first Pokémon Concierge teaser trailer. Netflix became the home for the English dubbed versions of the Pokémon anime series heading into season 23, alternatively known as Pokémon Journeys, as well as the movies Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution and Secrets of the Jungle. The anime has stirred up waves for the announcement Ash Ketchum and Pikachu will no longer be the main characters, though executive director Kunihiko Yuyuama did recenly tease they would return.
Fresh off of the main anime show's return, Netflix has revealed a new addition to the Pokémon franchise with the Pokémon Concierge trailer.
The short teaser trailer, as seen above, highlights the stop-motion animation going into the new Netflix show with an adorable Psyduck walking along a sunny beach. The narration reveals Pokémon Concierge will center on the titular employee at the resort created specifically for the eponymous creatures.
How Pokémon Concierge Can Evolve Long-Running Franchise
Pokémon Concierge marks an interesting step forward for the long-running Pokémon franchise as it is the first project Netflix has collaborative insight on with The Pokémon Company, having previously just been releasing the films and shows after their original airings in Japan. The series is coming from dwarf studios, the critically acclaimed production house behind the Rilakkuma and Kaoru, another beloved stop-motion Netflix animated show, tapping into an underused genre format.
Recent years have seen Netflix enjoy success in the stop-motion field. This past year alone saw the releases of both Wendell & Wild from The Nightmare Before Christmas' Henry Sellick, and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, which is already considered a frontrunner for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, namely after its recent Golden Globe win for the same award.
In addition to taking the franchise in a new stylistic direction, Pokémon Concierge makes for an exciting new direction in how it explores the titular creatures. While previous chapters have shown them as individuals, introducing a resort where Pokémon can explicitly get away from the battles of their trainers for a vacation, thus presenting the chance to further flesh out the various species from their already notable traits. Though the series is expected to center on the titular human, it will be interesting to see how else Pokémon Concierge explores a different section of the universe.
