Warning: contains spoilers for Rise of the Powers of X #4!

The Phoenix Force is one of the most powerful in the Marvel Universe, but now a terrifying new threat, capable of killing it, has emerged, and it potentially rewrites Marvel’s cosmic hierarchy. As the Krakoa era comes to an end, Earth’s mutants are attempting to resurrect the Phoenix Force. However, in Rise of the Powers of X #4, Dominion swears to destroy it, upsetting the cosmic balance.

Rise of the Powers of X #4 is written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by RB Silva. Moira McTaggert accepted the offer of Enigma to become part of it. In a text piece, Enigma is signaling to its brethren: Dominion. It alerts them of the mutants’ plan to bring back the Phoenix Force.

Text piece in which Enigma calls to others for help.

Invoking the mysterious “56757-575,” in which something similar happened, it pleads for help.

In another text piece, the other Enigmas say if the Phoenix returns, they will “all come.”

The Phoenix Force Has Very Few Equals in the Marvel Universe

To Be Able to Destroy the Phoenix Force, the Enigmas Must Be Very Powerful

Phoenix Force

The issue ends on that note, leaving fans waiting to see if the remaining Enigmas are going to thrown down with the Phoenix Force. The Enigmas, recently revealed in the pages of the X-Men titles, are super intelligences from outside the universe. Consisting of countless assimilated beings, Enigma is perhaps the biggest threat to the multiverse ever. Now, thanks to the machinations of Mister Sinister and Moira McTaggert, it is gunning for our reality. The X-Men and the Phoenix Force are all that can stop them. The Enigmas do not seem to be bothered by the Phoenix Force at all.

The implications that the Enigmas can defeat the Phoenix Force are not only chilling, but potentially upend the cosmic power structure in the Marvel Universe. The Phoenix Force is one of the oldest in all existence. It possesses the power to create and destroy. It has humbled gods and slaughtered entire galaxies. The Phoenix Force has even survived different incarnations of reality. This seems to give the Phoenix Force the aura of invincibility. Indeed, very little has been able to stop it. That is, until the Enigmas, who seem confident in their ability to snuff it out.

However, hope may not be lost. Previous issues of Rise of the Powers of X hinted Xavier may have planted some sort of “Trojan horse” in young Moira that could destroy Enigma. Also worth noting is “56757-575.” While the text pieces were coy about what this means, it seems to imply that the Phoenix Force was able to get one over on at least on Enigma. This Enigma has seen the powers of the Phoenix Force firsthand, and knows of its power. The Enigmas know that if it wishes to conquer our reality, the Phoenix Force must be destroyed.
