- Best Picture: Anora
10:58PM, Rachel - As those of us here at ScreenRant wrap up and bid adieu to the 2024-25 awards season, we just want to say thank you for following along with us! We had a blast, and we hope you did too. And if you want to look back on the ceremony, check out our full Oscar winners list!
10:54PM, Alex - Agreed, I had a great time. A fitting conclusion to an excitingly wide-open awards season that Anora, the initial front-runner, ended up the big winner after all.
10:51PM, Rachel - What a show! In case anyone was wondering, though my prediction streak was lost long ago, I still got 18 categories right. That Mikey Madison surprise caught me at the end! But overall… a pretty exciting ceremony.
WINNER
Best Picture: Anora
After winning four awards earlier in the night, Sean Baker's Anora gets the big prize, thus allowing the writer-director to set the record for the most wins in a single night, as he gets Best Picture as a producer.
10:39PM, Alex - Wow. Mikey Madison is an incredibly deserving winner, but that makes this no less of a surprise. I’m having flashbacks to Olivia Colman’s win, honestly!
WINNER
Best Actress in a Leading Role: Mikey Madison, Anora
After many predicted Demi Moore would win the Oscar for The Substance, it's Madison's performance in Anora that gets the honor.
10:32PM, Rachel - In case people are wondering, we are now officially running long. Great speeches though!
WINNER
Best Director: Sean Baker, Anora
Baker gets his third award of the night with Best Director, putting him well on track to break that impressive record of winning the most awards in a single night.
10:26PM, Alex - I guess if you’re a two-time Oscar winner, you can get them to turn the music off! Did Adrien Brody just set the record for longest acceptance speech ever?
WINNER
Best Actor in a Leading Role: Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
Brody scores his second Oscar for The Brutalist, with the first previously coming in 2003 for The Pianist.
10:20PM, Alex - Ah, so clips are back for the Best Actor category, and presumably for Best Actress, too. I wonder why that would be?
10:10PM, Rachel - And so one of my favorite movies of 2024 goes home with no Oscars. It’s okay, The Wild Robot. You’re still a winner in my heart.
10:09PM, Alex - The Academy making the right choice in Best Score almost takes the sting off the Challengers snub. But not quite.
10:07PM, Alex - Bum bum bum BUUUUUUUUM!
WINNER
Best Original Score: The Brutalist
Winner Daniel Blumberg notes he's been an artist for 20 years, and felt he met his "artistic soulmate" upon meeting The Brutalist director Brady Corbet.
10:02PM, Rachel - I didn’t pick I’m Still Here for my Vulture Movie Fantasy League, but I did pick The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez so I’m doing… okay?
9:58PM, Alex - I was lucky enough to see I’m Still Here when it premiered at Venice, and I told people then that they shouldn’t sleep on it at the Oscars. I don’t have any proof of that, of course, but I did pick it in my Vulture Movie Fantasy League roster!
WINNER
Best International Film: I'm Still Here
Also a Best Picture and Best Actress contender, Brazil's heart-wrencher wins Best International Film, a category that was filled with some heavy-hitters, including Flow and The Seed of the Sacred Fig. This marks the first time Brazil has won in this category.
9:55PM, Graeme - I was starting to fear The Brutalist would be this year’s The Irishman, but Lol Crawley pulled out the win for The Brutalist. Adrien Brody is probably feeling a bit more comfortable now, though I don’t think we should forget Timothée Chalamet’s SAG win quite yet…
WINNER
Best Cinematography: The Brutalist
Awards season darling The Brutalist finally picks up an award, with cinematographer Lol Crawley stepping up to accept the award.
9:52PM, Alex - I’m dying to know what the conversations were that resulted in Angelina Jolie not being the representative of Maria to present this award…
9:47PM, Rachel - Graeme and I are feeling strangely unsettled by the decision to play that Mozart piece for the In Memoriam.

What The Heck Was Up With The Oscars 2025's In Memoriam Song Choice?!
The In Memoriam segment is always one of the most talked-about parts of the Oscars, with the song choice this year being controversial.
9:41PM, Rachel - Everyone always has that one person that they tear up seeing in the In Memoriam. For me this year, it’s seeing the brilliant Dame Maggie Smith at the very start of the montage.
WINNER
Best Live-Action Short Film: I'm Not a Robot
The sci-fi Dutch-language short takes home the prize!
9:32PM, Alex - I’d just like to point out that at this moment, there’s a chance Dune: Part Two ends the night with the same number of Oscar wins as Emilia Pérez. Do with that information what you will.
WINNER
Best Visual Effects: Dune: Part Two
Dune: Part Two quickly scoring back-to-back wins! And yes, the first Dune won this one as well.
9:28PM, Graeme - Despite it being severely underappreciated by the Academy, I am very glad Dune: Part Two won’t be walking away empty-handed tonight. The Denis Villeneuve snub still hurts, though.
WINNER
Best Sound: Dune: Part Two
Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two scores its first award of the night, Best Sound, which the first movie also earned back in 2022.
9:25PM, Alex - I expected Conan to honor the LA fires first responders at some point tonight, but I didn’t foresee him turning firefighters into his personal burn unit…
9:23PM, Rachel - With the ceremony scheduled to run until 10:30pm, we’re approaching what should be the final hour. Do we think it’ll actually end on time? My guess is no…
9:17PM, Alex - No Other Land infamously entered tonight without a US distributor. Think Oscar Winner No Other Land can finally get one?
WINNER
Best Documentary: No Other Land
No Other Land was made by a Palestinian and Israeli collective, covering the destruction of the occupied West Bank through the connection between a Palestinian activist and an Israeli journalist.
WINNER
Best Documentary Short: The Only Girl in the Orchestra
Molly O'Brien and Lisa Remington accept the award. O'Brien, who directed the short, is the niece of the doc's subject, Orin O'Brien.
9:06PM, Alex - Another check-in with the Press Room, where Conclave’s screenwriter, Peter Straughan, called attention to the movie’s success at the box office:
I was sort of brought up with '70s American cinema, and I think it was never questioned then that something could be an adult drama and still be a success at the box office. I think we kind of lost that a little bit, but hopefully Conclave goes to prove that you can be a serious - or even a funny - grown-up drama and still have an audience at the box office.
9:05PM, Alex - Well, that was, uh, something.
WINNER
Best Original Song: "El Mal" from Emilia Pérez
The controversial Emilia Pérez takes home its second award of the night for the song Saldaña sings and dances to in the middle of the film. Screenwriters Camille and Clément Ducol accept the award, and Camille spends a fair bit of time singing the titular character's name over and over.
WINNER
Best Production Design: Wicked
The duo from Wicked wins and gives a special shout-out to director Jon M. Chu and other of the creative team.
8:52PM, Alex - ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender is seated in the Winners Press Room, and she’s ed along this heartwarming quote from Wicked’s costume designer, Paul Tazewell:
This is the pinnacle of my career. I've been deg costumes for over 35 years, much has been on Broadway and now into film. And the whole way through, there was never a Black male designer that I saw, that I could follow, that I could see as inspiration. And to realize that's actually me, it becomes a Wizard of Oz moment, you know. It was like "No place like home." To come back to the inspiration being inside of me was really remarkable.
8:47PM, Graeme - As expected, Zoe Saldaña gives an emotional speech that makes her win feel all the more deserved. Pretending this is for Avatar as much as it is for Emilia Pérez…
WINNER
Best ing Actress: Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez
Zoe Saldaña takes home her very first Oscar for her performance in Emilia Pérez, giving a powerful speech about the strength of women. She's the first woman of Dominican descent to win the award!
8:44PM, Graeme - Seeing Isabella Rossellini and Laura Dern sitting next to each other warms my Lynchian heart and is making me dread the In Memoriam segment after so many recent losses.
8:42PM, Alex - Well, this is huge! Editing was the one place I was sure Sean Baker wouldn’t end up winning. Should we be looking for Anora to win everywhere now (including Best Actress)?
8:41PM, Rachel - My streak is now broken because I incorrectly put down The Brutalist for editing, but I'm not mad, as I am in fact an Anora fan.
WINNER
Best Editing: Anora
That's two for Anora so far! Sean Baker back on stage for his latest win.
8:29PM, Graeme - Unfortunately, now I will never be satisfied until Margaret Qualley is in a James Bond movie…

Why The Oscars 2025's James Bond Tribute Is Awkwardly Timed
The 2025 Oscars included an elaborate tribute to the James Bond franchise, but given the state of the franchise it seemed awkwardly timed.
WINNER
Best Makeup & Hairstyling: The Substance
The intense body horror hit The Substance takes the win! Monstro Elisasue must be thrilled.
8:22PM, Alex - With apologies to Conan (who’s doing great so far), June Squibb just delivered the joke of the night so far for me.
8:19PM, Alex - Having problems trying to stream the Oscars live on Hulu? Apparently, you’re not alone…
8:17PM, Rachel - Rachel is feeling pretty good right now, as she’s guessed every category correctly. How long will her streak last? Who knows!
8:13PM, Graeme - As expected, it’s shaping up to be a battle between Conclave and Anora, the two frontrunners. Editing is just one award away and it could give us a better idea of where things are heading later.
WINNER
Best Adapted Screenplay: Conclave
Peter Straughan accepts the award for Conclave's screenplay, which is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Harris, who receives a shout-out during Straughan's speech.
8:11PM, Alex - , Sean Baker could make Oscars history tonight by winning the most awards in a single ceremony. Original Screenplay is in the bag. Will Editing, Directing, and Best Picture follow?
8:08PM, Graeme: Anora wins Best Original Screenplay. Is this the beginning of a sweep for the Best Picture frontrunner? And are we staring down Baker breaking the record of winning 4 Oscars in one night for the same film?
WINNER
Best Original Screenplay: Anora
Sean Baker takes home his first Oscar for writing Anora, which is also up for several more awards tonight.
8:06PM, Graeme - Nick Offerman making his presence known as announcer after purposely mispronouncing Amy Poehler’s last name before the commercial break and interrupting Conan O’Brien mid-bit. The dynamic duo we didn’t know we needed.
8:02PM, Alex - I quite like having stars from the nominated movies praising their own craftspeople. You can tell they really care. More of that, please, Academy!
WINNER
Best Costume Design: Wicked
Paul Tazewell accepts the award for Wicked, and notes he's the first Black man to win the award. He earns enthusiastic applause from the audience!
7:54PM, Rachel - Stars from the five movies nominated for Best Costume Design—Lily-Rose Depp (Nosferatu), Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown), John Lithgow (Conclave), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator II), and Bowen Yang (Wicked)—appear to present the award, leading to a funny moment with Yang wearing his Wicked costume while his fellow presenters are dressed in typical awards show finery.
WINNER
Best Animated Short: In the Shadow of the Cypress
Filmmakers Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi take the stage to give a poignant speech, mentioning they only just got their US visas to attend the ceremony yesterday.
7:42PM, Alex - The night’s first upset! As the person who wrote ScreenRant’s 9/10 review of Flow, I am thrilled to see it take this prize.
WINNER
Best Animated Feature Film: Flow
Flow, which is also up for Best International Feature, takes the win and defeats 2024's box office winner Inside Out 2. Fun Fact from Graeme: Flow is the first independent film to win Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.
7:35PM, Graeme - After speculation that clips would return for the announcement of acting nominees, the Best ing Actor reveal moves ahead without them. Are they saving them for Best Actor & Actress? Or are they depriving us of one of the most missed elements of the ceremony?
7:33PM, Alex - Not sure I’ve ever seen a winner use their speech to roast their significant other, but it works! A truly winning speech by Culkin, whose dominance of the precursors clearly didn’t make this moment any less special for him.
WINNER
Best ing Actor: Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
Kieran Culkin wins Best ing Actor for his performance in A Real Pain! His speech features a special shout-out to his Succession brother and fellow nominee Jeremy Strong.
7:28PM, Rachel - Robert Downey Jr. takes the stage to present Best ing Actor and pays tribute to all the nominated actors in his typically charismatic and humorous way.
7:25PM, Graeme - A moving tribute to all the people behind the camera who make film possible before a fittingly strange musical number from O’Brien and the first award of the night - Best ing Actor, which Kieran Culkin seemingly has locked in.
7:22PM, Graeme & Rachel - O’Brien is making this opening monologue gig seem absolutely effortless. It looks like he’s having a fun time and getting a great response from the audience, especially during a hilarious bit with an under-dressed Adam Sandler.
7:15PM, Graeme - First Karla Sofía Gascón joke of the night to uproarious laughter, something only Conan O’Brien could pull off.
7:10PM, Alexander - Well, that was an incredible start! Cynthia Erivo brings the house down with her powerful rendition of “Defying Gravity”, and the whole ScreenRant team has chills!
7:00PM, Rachel - Showtime! The ceremony begins with a montage dedicated to Los Angeles, while Ariana Grande takes the stage to sing "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz.
6:55PM, Rachel - The show's about to begin! The red carpet comes to a close as the last celebrities head inside.
