The making of any film is a long and grueling process, but for the characters of The Godfather than a usual motion picture. There's a slew of strong personalities from the writers, the producers, and for these filmmakers, the mafia. Each of the characters have extremely different views on how the film should be made or if the film should even be made at all.
Though set in the early 1970s, viewers can still relate to the universal truths and themes that are put on display by the eclectic cast of characters. As viewers watch the show, it becomes clear that some characters are fueled by ion, some by family, and many by greed.
Aries: Al Ruddy
Though The Offer exaggerates things about the making of The Godfather, including Al Ruddy's role in it, his persistence in the advancement of the film and his career are no exaggeration. Ruddy's bold moves to get himself in the door at Paramount, and to get stars like Robert Redford to work with him, stem from his audacious characteristics.
Ruddy possesses all the great Aries qualities in his leadership, competitive nature, and ability to dive head first into any challenge- even if that challenge is going head to head with the mafia. But as viewers see later in the series, Ruddy's unwavering nature to get what he wants can sometimes get him in hot water. Without Ruddy and his Aries characteristics, viewers probably would have never bared witness to the masterpiece that is The Godfather.
Taurus: Ali MacGraw
MacGraw begins the series seriously dating producer, Robert Evans. But midway through the shoot of The Godfather, and midway through the series, he comes to find out that she has been cheating on him with her co-star, Steve McQueen. Tauruses need to be pampered and showered with love, and since Evans couldn't provide this for her, she had no choice but to look elsewhere.
Tauruses are opportunists when it comes to love, comfort, and money. Though Tauruses are known for their companionship and trustworthiness, they are also known to stay in unhealthy relationships longer than they should - something that MacGraw's character is all too familiar with.
Gemini: Robert Evans
Geminis often get a bad rap, but as Robert Evans proves, it's just because of how dang busy they are. As the head of Paramount Pictures, Evans took on the Gemini characteristic of biting off maybe more than he can chew. But because Geminis are so ambitious and driven by their own curiosity, Evans was able to get it all done.
Though he may have let his personal life fall apart, his career boomed as he took on the Gemini classic of living almost a double life. Geminis and Evans alike are both quick witted, buzzy, social butterflies who can talk about anything. This ability to talk about anything may have been the golden ticket to getting this movie made.
Cancer: Francoise Glazer
Franciose Glazer is one of many powerful women in The Offer. But one characteristic that makes her stand apart from the rest is her innate intuition, something that Cancers are known for. Francoise put this intuition to the test when she questions her boyfriend, Al Ruddy, on what has been going on with him after he was targeted by the mafia. Like any true Cancer, Glazer's comion and trustworthiness allowed others to open up to her, and allowed her to be part of conversations that she may not have been.
Leo: Joe Colombo
Leos, represented by the lion, perfectly encapsulate Joe Colombo's personality and innate desires. Just like the lion, Colombo will do anything to protect his family, which is why he creates the Italian-American Civil Rights League, against others' best judgement.
His ion for himself and his cause truly represents what it means to be a Leo. Since they are notoriously the center of attention, Leos are often leaders, not because of their skill per se, but their desire to be in charge. Colombo takes on these Leo characteristics as he may not be the best mob boss, but he sure loves it.
Virgo: Bettye McCart
Bettye McCart was able to get the job with Al Ruddy because of her Virgo characteristics of being consistent and approaching everything with practicality. McCart especially takes on the Virgo characteristic of being busy and logical. Virgos can be perfectionists, but most importantly, vigilant. McCart uses these attributes to not only succeed in her career, but to make the film a success as well. Most importantly, Virgos, like McCart, are methodical, committed, and hardworking.
Libra: Charles Bluhdorn
Though Charles Bluhdorn may sometimes seem like an antagonist to the making of the film, it's only because he wants to create the best product. Just like Bluhdorn, Libras have a need to strive for perfection to create equilibrium. Libras have exquisite taste and appreciate high art, another reason why Bluhdorn needs to see through the perfection of a film that he has a hand in creating. Bluhdorn is used to getting what he wants which is no surprise for a Libra who are known to effortlessly win any argument by turning on just the right amount of charm.
Scorpio: Francis Ford Coppola
As the director and co-screenwriter of the film, Francis Ford Coppola needs to have emotional energy to fuel all the characters that he helps bring to life. Scorpios have two side of their energetic coin, both of which resonate deeply with Coppola's personality and directorial style.
When scorpios are having a good day, their energy is ionate and infectious, just like viewers see in Coppola when he's writing the script with Puzo. Just like Scorpio, when Coppola doesn't get what he wants, he turns to his desire for control. But the Scorpio characteristic that most identifies with Coppola is his deep ion, one that was essential in creating the film.
Pisces: Al Pacino
In The Offer, viewers get a peak into a young Al Pacino, who is a very different Pacino than the actor fans have come to love today. Pisces have the wisdom and learned experiences expressed by all the other signs put together, making it the most sensitive sign. Pacino's sensitivity and ability to connect with an audience is what makes him such an incredible actor, and that Pisces nature can attest to that.
When first pitched with the idea of staring in The Godfather, Pacino doesn't think he's good enough. Pisces are known to not be the most confident of the sign as they don't crave too much attention. Instead, Pisces let their empathy guide them. Pacino was talked into his breakthrough part in the movie in part because Ruddy was able to pull on his heartstrings. Pisces just can't say no to emotional connection.
Sagittarius: Andrea Eastman
Andrea Eastman is unique in the entertainment industry as a woman in a position of leadership. Just like Eastman, Sagittarius is just as unique of a zodiac sign with its intricate blend of personality and fiery, ambitious desire. Sagittarius are known to launch head first into ventures where those before them have not gone. Eastman proves this Sagittarius trait to be true as she is trailblazer in her own right. Her bravery, brutal honesty, and unwavering ambition make her not only an amazing casting director, but a true Sagittarius.
Capricorn: Barry Lapidus
Barry Lapidus acts as the main antagonist to Robert Evans in his venture to get The Godfather made. Lapidus has opposite views on everything, sometimes just for the sake of getting on Evan's nerves. But like Capricorn, Lapidus agrees that the most valuable element in anything is time. And, making a film is no different when the phrase "time is money" is predominant with producers in the industry. Capricorn is symbolized by the "devil" card, which is fitting for Lapidus who plays devils advocate for the entirety of the production. Lapidus and Capricorn match up in their strong belief in persistence and perfection.
Aquarius: Mario Puzo
It's no surprise that the author of the book that the movie The Godfather is based on, is one of the most creative zodiac signs. After g on to write the screenplay for the film, Puzo is presented with the task of sharing the writing duties with future director, Francis Ford Coppola. For most, this might be a difficult task to share, but Aquarius are known for their ability to collaborate and work well, if not better, in a team. Aquarius, like Puzo, want to leave their mark on the world. And with the success of The Godfather and subsequent sequels, Puzo accomplished that Aquarius-like task.
