A new mod for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered sets out to improve the game's combat AI, tweaking it to be more responsive and engaging. The remaster of the classic Elder Scrolls title strives to balance upgrading the game for a modern audience, while keeping it recognizable as the 2005 fantasy RPG. Bethesda's remaster mostly hits the mark, but a new mod has been released that attempts to fix one of the title's downfalls: its slow combat system.
The Responsive Combat AI mod by Nexus Mods Maddensterror02 reworks the game's combat to make each battle feel more engaging. It does so by enhancing the AI to spend more time actually fighting and less time standing idly by. The mod affects most human and animal enemies, increasing the chances of them attacking, dodging, and blocking, resulting in battles that are more dynamic.
How This Mod Makes Oblivion Even Better
Give Every Battle Weight And A Challenge
Despite overwhelmingly positive overall reviews, Oblivion Remastered has received some criticism for a sluggish combat system. The bandit, human, and wolf enemies in particular tend to move slowly and not give players much of a challenge in opposing them. The Responsive Combat AI mod changes the way these enemies act, so their actions are less predictable, striving to tighten up each fight.

Oblivion Remastered: Best Battlemage Build (Skills, Spells, Weapons, & Armor)
Battlemage is one of Oblivion’s more interesting classes, combining melee and magic for a well-rounded, if flawed, fighter. Here’s how to make one.
Many Nexus Mods s praise the mod and its creator, stating that the fights do feel a lot more challenging now, especially when going up against wolves. The appropriately named wolfstriker calls the mod "exceptional," describing the way it's completely transformed the way battles against wolves are fought. They state:
"The wolves when I first tried OR were awful. They would jump at me and miss by 10feet. then stand there and do nothing. Now they lung attack at me forcing blocking and they are aggressive and have me running for [my] life!"
The mod does have some downsides, with some fans reporting that it causes archers to fire a nonstop volley of arrows at players. However, these bugs are likely to get ironed out in later versions as the mod's creator continues to refine it.
Oblivion Modders Aren't Slowing Down
Over 2,400 Mods And Counting
Ever since Bethesda shadow-dropped the remaster of its classic fantasy RPG, of the modding community have taken it upon themselves to make the great game even better. At the time of this writing, there are over 2,400 mods listed on Nexus Mods, with more appearing every day.
Granted, many of these mods are more like tweaks, and some useful key rebindings to visual effects and even bug fixes. While The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is a great game on its own, it can be tailor-made for any player's preference thanks to the abundance of mods already out there.
